BT Broadband - advice

Posted by: MontyW on 23 September 2006

Hi,

I upgraded to BT's 8Mb broadband service in May 06. I was previously with BT on their 2Mb package. Since I 'upgraded' to the 8Mb service, I have not been able to acheive a bandwidth that even comes close to my previous 2Mb. At various times of the day and night I avereage 232 kbps download and 331 kbps upload - poor I know.

I have had line tests and filters tested etc... and I have been told by BT engineers that there appears to no reason why I should not obtain way above 2Mbs, and my line is able to support 8Mbs.

I have complained to BT about the deminished performance and basically they are saying 'tough'.

Here is a response from BT: The terms and conditions of BT Broadband state that 8Mb speed is subject to various factors including local availability, distance from exchange and line test. As I have already explianed. The availability checker online also states wording such as you "should" be able to have a line speed and it also states that this is not a guaranteed speed. Please feel free to browse through the terms and conditions online at www.bt.com/getbroadband.
Any suggestions how I progress this - all I want is as a minimum my previous performance of 2Mbs to be restored!

Cheers,

Dave

That's exactly it, Howard.

I have nothing against the people themselves who are polite in the extreme, but BT have obviously gone the route of the cheap service and ended up with no service. You can actually pay extra for 'BT Home IT Advisor' which is based in the UK. But this is the service you should be getting as standard, not for 30p a day extra.

Hadn't seen that before. Yes I should not have to pay for that service.

The joys of being a broadband customer of BT.

My broadband connection is via Demon Internet. They've had their ups and downs over the years but personally I've found them very helpful when talking to them.

My original broadband connection was rather flaky. Called Demon, they done some testing and decided the problem was at the exchange. BT replaced the equipment in the exchange that night. Nice when BT have a service level agreement with another company rather than a direct consumer.

First I knew about my upgrade to 2meg was when I saw the progress bar on a download shoot across the screen, thought my download had failed.

My upgrade to 8meg happened at 2am on the Monday of a bank holiday weekend. Only knew about that when I got an e-mail saying my link had been upgraded. I now got a full 8meg down with 1/2meg up.

13 years with the same ISP and unless they really screw up, not changing!

My companies internet connection was moved over to Easynet by our network providers, that has been a total disaster for us and the link still fails several times a day, they still haven't fixed the issues in a month so they're one to avoid. Our providers are even putting in another ADSL line here via BT at their own expense due to the problems we've been having.

Just as a side issue, there are loads of companies touting 1 meg, 2 meg, 4 meg, 8 meg and even 10 meg broadband. No mention of 5 meg.

Do you think that is because of the difficulties of marketing a product called 5meg broadband?!!!

Might be well suited to BT though! Winker

Sorry, chaps.

I know that joke was a bit cheesy!
