Naim Uniti Firmware/Software upgrade availability?
Posted by: jim329 on 29 July 2009
Does Naim Uniti Firmware/Software upgrade is available? As my Uniti firmware is Aug 2008. It is out dated and it cannot play any 24/96 files through Lan. Also I found the control of picking songs through Lan is not user friendly.
Thanks a lot

I found the control of picking songs via Uniti front panel and iTunes very user friendly.
Guess we all have different likes/dislikes when it comes to interfaces but I find all elements of the Uniti extremely intuitive.

Where can you check if tou got the most recent software?
And what's the newest? Today?

There is not a 96/24 compatible firmware available as yet

Since you enter your ip of your Uniti, you can go to the page which shown the firmware version...

This seems very strange to me. I know it is not yet available and will allegedly be available soon. But why would they release it without this seemingly crucial ability?
Does the DAC accept 24/96? Is it only streaming the 24/96 that is an issue?

The French magazine "Stereo & Image" has opened the uniti and inform us about the DAC chip.
This one seems to be a WM 8706 from Wolfson Microelectronics.
WM 8706 datasheet
As you can see on this document the WM8706 supports data input word lengths from 16 to 32 bits and sampling rate up to 192 khz.
Of course I've downloaded test files from Naim Label website HERE
And of course the uniti don't play these files from a HD plugged in the front usb connector...
This is definitively surprising !
I'm not familiar with habits on this forum, do I ask directly Naim for any comments or could they post their response here ?
Occean,
Where have you read there is not a 96/24 compatible firmware available as yet?

Isn't this the same DAC chip as the CD5i?
Posted on: 09 August 2009 by JLD
JYOW,
In the text of the same article they wrote that the DAC was derived from the CD5X...
In this article they mention that the DAC for the CD5x is a Burr-Brown PCM1704 DAC chip...
This one is a 24/96 converter...
Burr brown data sheet
The Wolfson's DAC WM8706 is inside the CD5i as this video explain clearly this:
Interview of Mark Raggett
I don't know if there are several DAC chips in the uniti (one for the CD and another one for the inputs... but it seems that all these chips are at less 24/96...

This isn't possible, isn't it?? Or how can you do that? I only can use the "remote" on my iPod Touch. And control threw my airport express audio out -> optical -> uniti. But not on the uniti front panel. Tell me how!!
About the firmware version or software update. I now have these versions, will there be newer ones?
version 1.1.00
bootversion 1.1.00
CD SW 7.05
BC SW I200809260853
DP CB DR 002-001
MP CB MR 002-002
If there are newer versions how can i upgrade them?
BTW, the temperature of my uniti is 42 degrees celsius. How hot is yours?

Robbert you may have missed the whole point of the uniti.
Download some UPNP server software for your computer, avoid twonky as its a pile of shit. Allegro is good.
Run it.
Soon on your uniti the 'server' will appear.
The end.

Robbert,
As said by Garyi — download uPnP software to your computer. Run it. The Uniti will recognise it and you're away. The music on the computer will then show up on the front panel of the Uniti.
It's that simple and easy. Seriously, it is.
Personally, I don't use it because my music playing and collection is all CD-based at the moment. But I tried it in the anticipation that things might change in the future and it's nice to know I'll have the ability at hand if needed.
BTW: My Uniti runs around 40 degrees last time I looked — which was weeks ago. It's not an issue.
PS: I used EyeConnect for my uPnP — but only because it was free. Might be better out there. Depends what your needs are.
Hope that helps.

From a recent discussion with Naim HQ, I can say that the uniti is definitively unable to read 24/96+ files...
It seems to be related to a technical problem, but they didn't give me a lot of informations about a future firmware...

Wait and see. Until then, UPnP streaming of 16-bit/44.1 kHz files from the HDX / NS-Series servers is pretty cool on its own (with the upcoming software release).

David,
Is 24/96 supported by the Uniti via a hard connection, either USB of ethernet, or digital inputs?
thanks,
patrick

Well, unless you have 100Gb of Apple Lossless residing on your computer, then your options are somewhat more limited on how to get the Uniti to see it....
Steve.

Steve.
In what manner?
EyeConnect transcodes Apple Lossless files into 44.1kHz WAV for playback at the Uniti–no probs here.
Playback will also do the same, as will others.
Problems?

Thanks David for this precision that make all the difference! I hope to download 24/96 goodies from Naim Label sooner...
Please let me know how to be informed for a firmware update.

Is it impossible to have 24/96 playback as the DAC inside Uniti does not support??

Jim, the door seems not closed...
