Bottle neck/Slide Guitar

OK, it's payback time.
For those Naimies across the big ditch we have in resent times put up with the worst things to come out of America such as
Mc'Donalds and George Bush so if you will excuse the pun to "name" but a few, so now you owe us one.To get back in favor with the british public A list of your best BOTTLE NECK/ SLIDE GUITAR players is required NOT the players of that awful apperition that some players drop across their knees and then proceed to try to strangle, but the real bottle neck players ,preferably NON VOCALI have already started with Leo Kottke and John Fahey so others would be appreciated.
THEN we might just, and I'll only put it as strongly as that, forgive you for Ronald and George.
oldie.
ps this is open to anybody with good suggestions, not just those over the ditch but they should pay penance for their wrong doing.

Jerry Douglas, Ben Andrews (mixed with finger picking, a stomp board' and some vocals I'm afraid but really good), Steve James, Correy Harris, Rory Block, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder (of course), Roy Rogers, Sonny Landreth, David Linley, Chris Whitley.

Robby Kreiger's bottleneck solo on Moonlight Drive is one of my favourite bits of guitar work in all of rock.

Thanks for the info so far folks keep it coming please. Some of the recommendations I either already have ie Sonny,Ry,or I'm not to keen on their sound,ie Bonnie not enough bottle neck and to much vocal, imo. but there is quite a few to get to grips with once I have recovered from my last spending spree, thanks again for the info so far.

Fellas, Jerry Douglas is unfortunately a practitioner of "that awful apperition that some players drop across their knees and then proceed to try to strangle".
A virtuoso, yes. But a dobro virtuoso.

...and since nobody has yet mentioned the obvious, I'll throw in Duane Allman.
But I'm tellin' ya', Derek Trucks is miles ahead of the game.

Hi Jayd,
I wouldn't wish [well not this time] to get in to a argument,as there is bound to be,somewhere out there, the complete authority on all guitars,so I would say, whilst holding my breath, that a Dobro is a guitar as I would define one,and a wonderful sound it makes too.Derek truck is at the top of my must get list as soon as the threat of divorce and bankruptcy diminishes.
The G-d dam awful things that are dropped across the knee's and then strangled, are the things that you see played by the men with a funny taste in hats shoes and clothing or am I just digging my already deep hole deeper,I will now just stand back and wait for the fying stuff either to hit the fan or me. Quote of the week:- when in hole of own making don't call for a JCB to help.
Will also look up Duane Allman and add to list, thanks,

Oh, THOSE strangling fellows. Gotcha. Sorry, my bad. Then by all means, do check out Jerry Douglas.
And, good call on steering clear of the funny-hat-wearing-twangy-thingy-picking crowd.

I tend to like music with a strong vocal component so my two further suggestions - Lowell George and Dave Kelly - may not be to your taste.

Oldie,
Glad you liked the Ben Andrews (the Derek Trucks is great too - apart from his solo albums he's also on the Alman Brothers' most recent albums).
Just wanted to let you know that Ben Andrews records and plays locally; we go to see him in Hastings and he's definitely worth seeing.

For electric slide playing, you could check out "Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers". Taylor didn't use no stinkin' bottleneck slide, he used a steel slide and it showed! This raucous power trio's first album launched the Alligator record label. Johnny Winter is another quite talented slide player. I don't know if there are any all slide albums by Winter but you should find plenty of slide playing on his blues oriented albums. "Nothin' but the Blues" with the Muddy Waters Band is great. The cd is usually about $10.00 in the U.S. "White Hot and Blue" is also a good compilation.
Happy listening!

Hi Oldie,
I'll keep an eye on things. In the meantime here's a link to all his CD's.
David, "Nothin' but the Blues" is a fantastic album and Dean, your right, Elmore James, Son House and Mississippi Fred McDowell are all worthy starting points but at least the fuse has been lit.

Hi Oldie,
I'm back after the Christmas do so please type quietly.
If you go here you'll find "Stones in my passway"(which sounds like a nasty ailment) and "Gallows Pole", both of which are recommended. You'll also see an album by Geoff Achison called "Mystery Train" which you also need (trust me on this). All are priced at £12.
Have a splendid Christmas.
