OK, it's payback time.
For those Naimies across the big ditch we have in resent times put up with the worst things to come out of America such as
Mc'Donalds and George Bush so if you will excuse the pun to "name" but a few, so now you owe us one.To get back in favor with the british public A list of your best BOTTLE NECK/ SLIDE GUITAR players is required NOT the players of that awful apperition that some players drop across their knees and then proceed to try to strangle, but the real bottle neck players ,preferably NON VOCALI have already started with Leo Kottke and John Fahey so others would be appreciated.
THEN we might just, and I'll only put it as strongly as that, forgive you for Ronald and George.
oldie.
ps this is open to anybody with good suggestions, not just those over the ditch but they should pay penance for their wrong doing.

Hi Dave,
I trust that the seasons festivities have not left you to jaded. the Ben Anderson cd's arrived whilst we were away for a few days
and I haven't yet managed to get around to giving them a spin, but on the slightly sadder side the Geoff Achison Mystery Train is now out of stock in the UK and it's not known if it will be re pressed so if you know of anywhere else it's available I would be obliged
I've tried Amazon and Tower [no stock]
Thanks,
oldie.

Dave,
I had a bit of a flash of inspiration this morning[it doesn't happen very often] and contacted John Adams at Powerhouse Productions [ Bottleneck blues club] and he suggested that I should contact Geoff direct at Chaos Music as he might have a few copies left.Sooooooooooo email and order has gone off to Australia in the hope that he has.Now have to wait to find out, anything between 14 and 60 days [they seem to be a bit slow out there! must be based up in Darwin where things take a little longer.
Thanks again,
oldie.

If you're still taking suggestions, I'll add Kelly Joe Phelps to the list. He plays it lap-style, but bluesy. Strong singer too.
Try "Lead Me On" for the purest essence of what he's all about.

If you want it raw and real:
Goin’ Down to Eli’s
I’m went down to Eli’s
To get my pistol out of pawn
When I got back home
My woman had gone
Yea, I’m gonna murder my old lady
If she don’t stop cheatin’ and lyin’
Well, I’d rather be in Penitentiary
Than to be worried out of my mind.

Hi Dave,
Long time no speak, yes I finally received my copy of Mystery Train and I'm sure that ,that is how it arrived ,by train it took a couple of months but as you said well worth the wait but I must admit that the disc that occupies my player the most is Ben Andrews "journey" followed closely by "Gallows Pole" I have to say that in my opinion they are the best albums that I have ever acquired so a hearty thank you for the information.I'm still collecting Blues players and I'm looking forward to the return of Ben with hopefully a new CD.John at the Bottle Neck Blues Club has me on his mailing list,so I can keep in touch. If you have anyother players up your sleeve I would be obliged if you could pass them on.Once again Thanks very much for re lighting the fuse!

Hi Oldie,
Excellent news, I wasn't aware of the new CD. Please let me know what you think.
In the meantime, and prompted by scooterboy's mention of RL Burnside, let me recommend another Mississippi based blues band which I think you'll like, The North Mississippi Allstars, who played in London last week. Check out their first album "Shake Hands with Shorty", excellent stuff.
Last week the Allstars were accompanied by members of the Turner family who still carry on the extraordinary tradition of Otha Turners' Rising Star Fife & Drum Band (featured on Scorsese's Blues series). Very unusual but utterly beguiling.
Cheers
Dave

Hi Dave,
First the good news, postman arrived about an hour ago with a nice fat envelope so rushed up to top room for a listen.
Now it may not be the best £12 I have ever spent, but it comes Bl--dy close Favourite tracks, well the one that starts at "1" and goes on to"13" definitely a must have for anyone even if they only had a passing interest in "Blues" highly recommended
Ben Andrews:- The Blue Riders Ride Again.
John[Blues Club]also put a flyer in and it seems that Geoff Achison is at the Komedia in Brighton just a couple of days before I fly up to sunny Scotland for a few weeks, so off to get tickets before they sell out ,so every thing seems to be falling into place.
Oh I forgot there isn't any bad news
ALL THE BEST

The Ben Andrews CD sounds good, I'll get my order in today.
I hope you enjoy the Geoff Achison gig but I should "warn" you that he tends to play an exclusively electric rather acoustic set, which is a bit of a shame.
Cheers

Last night I played an Uncut magazine CD from around 2001/2
Best track was "The Farm" from Rainer Ptacek's live album "Rainer Live at the Performance Center". Does anyone have any comments on this or other Rainer discs as reviews seem favourable?

I've got to say I've not heard of him. Presumably he's a bluesy slide guitarist?

The Two Rainer Albums with reviews I've found are Performance Centre and The Farm
Also a Tribute

Hi Denis,
These look like compelling reviews - I'm certainly up for a copy.
Thanks for the nod.

That's even better than the deal I got: £8.50 at the Amazon Marketplace, supplemented by Hot Tuna (Remastered) [Us Import] and Hot Tuna Recorded Live (Import) for £15.13. Ahh, the joy of the internet!

Dave,
Did you get hold of the latest Ben Andrews
Cd The Blue Riders ride again, and if you did what do you think of it apparently it's a American issued disc re titled for UK. When processed through Music Collector it comes up with its original but totally different title, still a bl--dy good disc though imo.

No, I haven't got hold of a copy yet. It's on the list but I'm waiting for Amazon et al to deliver a ton of other stuff before hitting the Visa again.
In the meantime, the Hot Tuna I mentioned above is terrific - pretty sure you'd enjoy it if you haven't already got it.
Rainer's "The Farm" also arrived earlier this week and is sounding promising. Anyone enjoying this should also check out Chris Whitley, particularly "Living with the Law" and "Dirt Floor" (rampant Dobro-driven vocal angst).
Cheers

Chris Whitley's "Live at Martyr's" is even more rampant. Sometimes brutal, sometimes almost out of control... it's a wild ride.

Fair assessment. For some reason, perhaps becuase of the apparent lack of control, this album doesn't quite gel for me but I keep going back to try again.
What else you listening to, jayd?

If you can find it, a fairly obscure album on the House Of Blues Label by Paul Black and the Flip Kings called "King Dollar" features some very hot and tasty electric slide playing.

Hi Dave. On the slide side, I'm currently re-exploring Ben Harper, especially "Burn to Shine" and "Fight for Your Mind". I'm looking for a good live album of his, and secretly scouring yard sales and pawn shops for a Weissenborn guitar of my own (as if). I'm also checking out the ragtime slide playing of Tampa Red - the man could play a line that would draw blood. And I always have the Derek Trucks Band in the rotation somewhere.
Regards,
Jay
