i've been told that the new hard drives are much more silent (and are 100 gb bigger). is it worth the upgrade (eur 398)?

Are you being offered a choice? (i.e. a new HDX for two different prices)
How noisy do you think the existing HDX is? Have you tried it in your home?
For whats it's worth, I've never found the HDX internal noise intrusive, but I suppose it depends on how close you sit.
Drive capacity is a non-issue, unless you are planning never to use a NAS

Nope,

you can spend less money than that and get a NAS with a couple of 1.5 TB drives to store more music.

...or wait for the SD upgrade to solid-state disk.

I agree with Dave, if the noise bothers you and you can upgrade to the SD HDD as opposed to the HDD 500 GB, that seems the more sensible way to go, assuming the upgrade to SDD is reasonable and obviously it seems that it will be an offered choice from Naim.

Are new HDXs being shipped with the HDD upgrade already in-situ?
