Modern sonatas for cello and piano

Posted by: stephenjohn on 08 February 2004

Dear All

I've been trying to establish a collection of C20th abd C21st chamber music.

Cello sonatas with piano that I have enjoyed very much are:
Kodaly
Macmillan
Schnitke No1
Carter

Others I enjoy less are:
Shostakovich
Prokofiev

Can anyone make recommendations of others that I might try?

best wishes

Steve

Omer

yes, you're right. I forgot to mention the Britten. I have a recording with Britten and Rostopovich which I have enjoyed but I forgot about yesterday.

I think I may have the Martinu too. Thanks Nick

Stephen - on a related note, you might enjoy;

Boulez Le Marteau sans Maitre, or the early Sonatine for flute and piano

Ferneyhough Lemma-Icon-Epigramm

Xenakis Dikhthas (violin and piano), Kottos (solo cello)

Regards

I checked, I have vol 1, which has 3 sonatas on it. I've not played it for a while, I'll listen again, I don't remember being caught by it last time.
Boulez, Ferneyhough, Xenakis, sound interesting, I'll check them out. Thanks David

stephenjohn,

Related to a previous thread, the complete Elizabeth Maconchy quartets have just been rereleased on Regis (3CDs for less than £5 each). I've ordered my copy.

I haven't heard this particular record, but I love Hindemith and I've heard good things about cellist Wendy Warner.

There's a review of it here:

Hi David
yes I have a copy of the Maconchy SQs, I'm working my way through slowly. I'm not yet sure that I have discovered their depths. Getting 13 SOs in one go takes me a lot of getting used to. I like owning them though because it feels like an interesting location that I can go and visit and explore any time I want.
Fred is the Hindmith early or late? I find his earlier work more appealing, he seemed to knock his own edges off as he got older

It's his complete chamber works for cello:

  • Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 25, No. 3
  • Variations on "A frog he went a-courting"
  • Sonata 1948
  • Capriccio, Op. 8, No.1
  • Sonata, Op. 11, No. 3
