Idiots guide to computer audio.

Hi

I have a Mac Book pro, itunes etc, Cambridge DAC and Naim system. I mostly use the HDX/CDs but like the occasional song downloaded from iTunes (at 256?)
Can I get these on to the HDX some how?
Or, if playing from the Mac, how can I do it wirelessly. I've thought about Airport Express but can this connect and transfer digital files to the DAC?

System is HDX/102/NAPSC/HC/200/Neat 4is.

Cheers

You can't put the iTunes files into the HDX, but (and I quote from product website) -

"Music from the HDX is not just limited to ripped CDs. The HDX can play WAV, FLAC, AAC, MP3 and WMA from any connected storage device whether it is USB or network attached."

So you have a number of different options - if it is just iTunes 256 res downloads then I suspect the quality will be similiar using an attached USB device storing the files or streaming via Airport Express (connecting via USB I would guess to bypass the AE's DAC).
An attached USB or network device will be required however if you start downloading any of Linn's Studio Master FLACS or albums from any other HD type websites, as the Airport Express is limited to 16bit/44.1kHz output.

I don't know if this is a feature of the latest software only, but your iTunes library can be indexed for use by the HDX - assuming they are on the same network. You can use an Airport Express to network the HDX wirelessly, but how easy it all is to set up on a Mac, I don't know (no experience). But I'd be prepared to bet it's easier than doing it on a Windows network Winker

Your HDX is hard wired into some network. Make sure the MAC is also in that network and you'll have access to whatever music is on it. Add a wireless router at the main router and you're good to go. I'm surprised you don't have that already with a laptop. Perhaps you're already there and just have to address permissions.

Thanks. I did say it was the idiots guide.. The HDX is on a wired network, the Mac wireless. Turned 'home sharing' on in iTunes (not sure if that's the thing to do). Can't see any network music on the HDX yet.
Maybe I need the software update for the HDX for this to work.

You will need to turn on File Sharing under System Preferences - Sharing. See the docs below:

Andrew, we have just received the HDX update and are working through our HDX clients (of which you are one). If you can contact us this week and arrange a time for me to do the upgrade...I can then show you what the new upgrade will allow you to do.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Bruce
