For The Married and the Quasi-Married

What music do you play in your significant other's absence that your S.O. can't stand?

Almost everything in my collection, unfortunately; although I admittedly have a predilection for noisy, atonal sounds that I can't reasonably expect others to like. For her part, my wife likes just the kind of country music I can't stand.

A second pair of speakers in another room of the house has kept the marriage happy.

Hi EJL,

pardon my curiosity, but how do you do this double speaker system on Naim?

I have A & B speakers on an Arcam amp, but pretty soon I'm switching to Naim amps, that do not A or B...

"pardon my curiosity, but how do you do this double speaker system on Naim?"

I move the entire front-end (sources, rack, and amps, but rarely the tt) from one room to the other roll eyes . The whole thing, including some quick cable dressing, only takes about 10 minutes; still, I usually leave it in one room for a few days at a time.

Isobariks in the large room, Saras (or something else from my bookshelf "collection") in the other.

Sorry for the boring low-tech solution.

Anything prefix - rock music (post-, prog-, kraut -etc), minimalism, plainchant, alt.country and John Zorn! This constitutes about 50% of my collection. Worse is the fact that she doesn't remember band names, so generally a dislike is not discovered until "Turn that crap off!"

Gut churning Drum & Bass like Bad Company, Matric, Dom & Roland Ed Rush etc. The wife claims it makes her feel physically sick.

Also I am specifically banned from playing Hanatatrash, Merzbow, MZ412, Current 93, Panacea, Severed Heads, Arcane Device and several others.

So, when she is down the health club, I have an opportunity to let rip!

Her taste (I use the word advisidly) stretch from the Osmonds to David Cassidy, from Will to Gareth, and also Steps and Robiie Williams.

You see what I have to deal with?

When we got together, my wife looked through my record collection and claimed she hadn't even heard of any of the artistes let alone liking their music (This was a lie as my collection included Bowie, Clash, Jam, Madness etc. etc.)

My son is now 13 and she's started the "turn that noise down!" scream beloved of all mothers - trouble is she now does it to me too!

Anyway as for what do I play when she's out of ear shot...
The Cure
Joy Division
Van Der Graaf Generator
Placebo
Radiohead

anything light and cheerful actually.

p.s. What's a Maine Coon?

That's about it. She reckons his voice reminds her of a dirty old man who used to hang around her school.

What Dutch's photo doesn't show is how F.O big these beasties are, about twice the size of yer average moggie. They seem to be popular in Amsterdam, we have a friend there with two.

...who is also a great pianist big grin

Not much seem to be intollerable, although Albert Ayler Trio did cause her to ask 'So what was that you were playing when i came in'.

My girlfiend seems to have very good taste and introduced me to a lot of what I listen too now, however she dosn't feel this has been repaid.

So alas if I am playing any of the following she may comment but more often than not busies herself elsewhere!

Frank Zappa
Yes

Oh hang on thats it, not too bad eh?

Don't what her beef is with Zappa though confused

Although I can understand the Yes issue smile

when She Who Must Be Obeyed was out last Sunday, pulled out my copy and played Plague of Lighthousekeepers (the ultimate VdGG epic) for the first time in ages.

The lp has seen better days - I think I must have lent it to too many friends who owned TT's with little stylii(?) like knitting needles. Looks like I'll have to try the record shoppes for a replacement.

Must catch up with PH's more recent output sometime... just been browsing Amazon.co.uk for PH there list of 'other artists bought by people who bought this' was ...

Van der Graaf Generator (goes without saying)
Caravan (similar vintage)
Camel (ditto)
Jethro Tull

and

Cliff Richard!!! (I guess that was a present for the wife!)

SteveB - it seems we share a birthday as well as taste in music...

The VDGG Box has a superbly remastered Plague of Lighthouse Keepers on it. PH did intimate that the remastered albums would follow the box but nothing has appeared as yet-Virgin are not that committed to VDGG i suspect. I would recommend the box as it has some rare live recordings-Rimini,Italy 1975, not brilliant sound but very dynamic performances, all studio tracks remastered to a superb sound. Ironically had box for Xmas 2000 from other half as well as Faust box-just have to find the time alone to play them!!Steve
