Any speaker recommendations ?? NAC252/250/SC1/AV2/V175
Posted by: rael on 30 July 2003
I have just purchased a new system today which is due for delivery in anything upto 5-6 weeks but maybe alot less....

System Purchased
NAC252
NAP250
to integrate with my AV system AV2,NAP150(replaced by NAP250),NAPV175,SupercapI, My question is that I currently run the above system with Proac D15's which although are great speakers I have heard that with Naim they may be a bit laid back and that they prefer to work with tubes such as Cary, so I should be grateful for any recommendations as suitable alternative speakers which would do justice to that system, Naim or otherwise. I realise that speakers are particularly subjective but I would welcome anyones views.
Thanks

Hi there
Cool system.
There are plenty of good loudspeakers to choose from. I have listened to an thoroughly enjoyed the following:
Naim Allaes (my personal favourite, synergy with Naim kit, great matching centre, a little cold and need careful positioning but immensly rewarding on a 250 power amp)
Kef XQ5 (modern, sophisticated, bags of detail, good rhythm ability, a little clean but very honest)
Dynaudio Contour 1.8mk2 (very different way of playing bass, sweet treble and mids - great centre available too)
I really like the MJ Acoustics subs if you're looking for a woofer: very fast and great value!
I wouldn't rush out to rid yourself of the Proacs yet though. Not my fave but a fine speakers nonetheless.
Good luck. With amps like that I'd make sure I had a hot DVD player and a CDX2 at least.

Should have said I have a CDXII/XPS2 aswell, so the system is
CDXII/XPS2/252/250/SCI/AV2/V175/
and Proac D15s speakers at the moment.
Thanks for the responses very interesting to know what is rated as a good match, so I intend to draw up a shortlist to audition although I agree that I shall give the proacs a fighting chance.
Cheers

Hi Real,
How do you like your D15 with your system so far? Have you considered ProAc One SC before you got your D15?

Rael and Paul C,
I think the N800 or 801's would be a little too much for the 250 to drive properly (esp. the B801's which are a real brute). I'm using 802's with 135's and I'd say that's the bare minimum.
Nice situation to be in though, the whole world of speakers to choose from for a fine Naim system.
Cheers

Regarding your speakers, you say:
I have heard that with Naim they may be a bit laid back and that they prefer to work with tubes such as Cary...
Well that may be true or not, but if you like them why change? it seems to me that you're changing the speakers because of what people have told you rather than what you actually like yourself. Now if you have decided to move on because you have noticed some limitations which you'd rather not have, then change the speakers, but if you have no complaints and actually like them it would be an odd choice to change them based on hearsday. Proac make a decent centre and you can put smaller Responses at the back, a half decent sub and you'll be off.
Come to think of it, haven't we already had this thread?

Frank.

I find this logic a bit suspect, and agree with Frank in th emost part.
I suspect that if the D15's are laid back (I've never heard them) then they may appeal to the same type of people who buy Valve Gear, to give an even more laid back presentation.
However you can make the argument that this type of speaker would match Naim very well by taming some of Naim's edginess and exuberance, and the Naim gear ensuring the approach does not venture into the boring. However on this forum many would advocate buying a speaker that reveals all Naims strengths by being fast, and direct. If you were happy with this speaker I would stick with it, for now at least.

Thanks for all your comments, I started another thread which is that I cahnged my order with my dealer so my system now will be CDXII/XPS2/252/300/SCII/Proac D15's
I intend to stay with the D15's for a while with the expenditure I have made but I would still be interested in your views on suitable speaker matches with my new setup.
I do like the D15's but I don't think the they are significantly better with the Naim gear than my Proac Signature 8's considering they are atleast twice the price. I will post my judgements however when running with the new setup.
In a hurry got to go out to the theatre !!
