Nanny State

I've seen this term used a few times on this forum, and I wondered where it is that those who are comfortable with the term feel the state is nannying them that it shouldn't be? I usually expect to see it in Daily Mail headline font at the newsagents, where its use seems somewhat confused. Do we have a bunch of would-be smackheads on the forum, or what?

Surely everyone wants a nanny state to protect the innocent and to keep the troublemakers in check and to encourage those who aren't doing the things we think they should.
Mind you everyone thinks it's a good idea as long as it doesn't interfer with their absolute right to do just whatever they like because as you know they have a lot more sense than the rest of the common herd and whatever the restrictions they don't apply to them.
