CD5 drawer rubs against bottom of case when closing

Posted by: Kei on 16 October 2002

Hi,

The bottom of the drawer on my CD5 rubs against the case when it's about halfway closed.

Except for the terrible grinding noise, would this affect the performance in any way? I *think* it shouldn't because the entire laser mechanism is part of the tray, but I'd like some reassurance.

Any way I can fix this?

Thanks,
Will

Gautam, what you're describing is entirely normal. However, "terrible grinding noise" sounds a little different from that.

You mean, metal to metal grinding, Kei? You did remove the transport bolts from the bottom (wild guess)?

Hi!

Had a similar problem, more scraping than grinding though. Took the thing apart and found that the flat cable the connects the transport to the rest of the machine was bent in a way so that it touched the chassi when closing the drawer.

Opening the case is kind of a challenge. Look for the topic "removing CD5 casing" to get the info.

Good luck!

There was a previous post somewhere along these lines. It is most likely as said above that this is the connecting ribbon cable as it folds/unfolds when the door is opened/closed.

This should not effect the sound quality of the deck. However, if in warrenty you could get Naim to resite it for you. Alternatively open the case and open/close the door, it will probabloy be obvious what the problem is.

Kei,

let the dealer open the case and fix it.

I'm familiar with the "click" sound the CD5 makes when the drawer is almost closed and I know that's normal.

In my case though, the drawer really is rubbing because if I look closely at the bottom of the drawer as it's closing, I see it rub against the case and make the "metal-on-metal" noise. I guess "grinding" was a over-dramatic term to use! ;-) It looks like it happens because the drawer is not perfectly centered. If I close the drawer with a gentle UPWARD pressure, it won't rub against the case and I don't get the noise.

Hope that's more clear. Does this happen because of over-tightening the transport screw? Can I fix it easily? If it means I have to open up the CD5, I think I'll just live with it if it doesn't affect the sound - which I don't think it does but can't be sure cause I don't have another CD5 to compare to. I read in this forum once that the screws on the CD5 are torqued to a very specific tightness by Naim so I don't want to go messing around with my screwdriver! ;-)

Thanks everyone,
Will

Hi,
I think I may have a similar issue with a CD3.5. The drawer has actually sagged so that the bottom left hand corner (when viewed from the front) is actually making contact with the rest of the case. I too get a "grinding" noise which I can eliminate if I lift the drawer a little as I close it.
I spoke with Naim a while back and it seems they have come across this before and so should be able to sort it out for you.

...my first CD3 did this. Turned out the drawer angle was adjustable. My dealer fixed it up no problem.

Hope you have a dealer you are comfortable with opening kit to mess with it. If not, insist on a new sample.
