Ethernet over power plugs

Just wondered if there is likely to be a difference between using a standard Ethernet cable and using a wall plugged Ethernet bridge to a music server. Also how would it compare with wi-fi?

If by 'wall plugged ethernet bridge' you mean those things that transmit the ethernet signals through the mains wiring then I'm not a big fan. I like to keep the mains as clean as possible so deliberately introducing an RF signal seems a bad idea.

Direct ethernet cable is viewed as best, but I'm running my Transporter through wifi and it sounds fantastic! The Transporter has a metal case with external antennas; people with plastic cases or internal antennas tend to report worse results.

I used Power over Ethernet (Panasonic) before with poor results. It does work as advertised but the performance in my house is pathetic, thruput is sustantially slower than 802.11G WiFi.

Additionally, since it uses up some bandwidth of your electrical circuits, I's be surprised if it doesnt introduce noise or degrades sound.

Like Davebk said, I also use Transporter. I usually use it with Fast Ethernet. but I did try wireless and it worked without a hitch.
