An Introduction to Madredeus

Posted by: Dunstan on 07 April 2006

For any forum readers who have not heard of them, may I introduce you to a Portugese group called Madredeus. I first heard them browsing in a hi fi shop in Celle, Germany and was quickly seduced by their wonderful blend of simple music (accoustic guitar, piano, accordian...) and the beautiful beautiful voice of Teresa Salgueiro.

You can listen to a selection of their music at www.madredeus.com and I would recommend Ao Longe o Mar (track 04) as a good starting place.

It's half past one on Saturday morning and I'm currently listening to their CD 'Antologia' with a glass of Ridge Geyserville red wine in my hand and I can assure you it is indeed a wonderful world.

If anyone has a return recommendation, music or wine, I would be pleased to hear it.

Dear Dunstan,

I am a few bars into track 04 and I love it already. Thank you for a good introduction.

All the best,

Erik

Dear Dunstan,

I have spent a couple of hours exploring the Madredeus website which is one of the best I have ever seen. There is so much music to listen to and video to watch and no attempt at all to get me to part with any money other than by beguiling me with truly beautiful performances. It seems so many fans have been introduced to their music by chance encounters whilst on holiday in Portugal, for example, and the many glowing reviews from fans on Amazon attest to a loyal following of devotees. I note they appear in concert in the UK later this year and I shall surely go.

Well, I have been awake all night as usual, but I have had Teresa Salgueira for company and that can't be bad. The internet..the best friend an insomniac ever had. Once again many thanks for introducing me to this wonderful music.

All the best,

Erik

Have seen Madredeus, a week ago in Mainz, and must say I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a tad more variations of the same theme. THAT theme, though, was beautiful, and you're absolutely right: Beautiful voice (and appearance !) of Teresa Salgueira and good company of the three acc. guitar players (let's put the cloth of silence on the synthy player...). Just add (Portuguese) summer, an open-air venue and a better view to the stage, and it could have been perfect.

cheers
Stefan

PS: Google for "Canto de la vida", "Castel Del Monte" or try Christina Pluhar or Christina Branco, if you want to see similar touching stuff (with sideways moves, of course...)

Erik,
Glad you enjoyed the website. I had a quick look at the wikipedia entry and was amazed to see they have sold over 3 million records. Looks like they can get by without my free advertising.

Stefan,
Thanks for your feedback too. I'm probably not ready for a massive expansion of my Portugese music collection, but I may well invest in a CD by one of your Christinas.
