KINGS OF LEON - CD PLAYABILITY

Posted by: JamieWednesday on 11 September 2003

Anyone had any problems playing the Youth & Young Manhood CD from Kings Of Leon?

On every track, a few seconds in, the sound degrades and skips for a couple of seconds on the NAIM, yet on the Rotel in my study, my portable and car players it's fine.

Any ideas..?

Sounds like copy protection (Cactus Data Shield).

You need a firmware update to the Naim player to cure it, it's usually 9-10s into every track.

You're right about the timing and I suspect it is copy protection as there is a logo relating to it on the back.

How do I go about getting the update?

Hi Andy,

Have you changed your email address ??, tried to contact you yesterday, but no reponse (thought you might be on holiday).

Would appreciate a mail.

Thanks

I have to pay to be able to play a CD?!

Try the vinyl.

The double 10" vinyl edition has to be one of the best records released this year so far.

Wonderful

Copy protected discs are not CDs because they do not comply with Red Book standards. If you do a search you will find many posts on this topic.

cheers

Fortunately I managed to avoid these CD's until the past couple of months (or take the offending articles back). But recently a fair percentage of my new purchases seem to have copy protection (Thrills, Kings of Leon, Darkness) I like these albums so do not want to ditch them so may have to get the PIC upgrade.

Ah - the joys of early adopters - my Darkness copy (Sainsburys) is unprotected and can be copied easy-as on my PC...

Kings of Leon on double 10inch is indeed very very cool Smile

No offence but you're not missing much with The Thrills though - IMO of course.

If by early adopters you mean purchase of the software, well this was bought on day 1 of release...I agree it's not a CD through not conforming to red book but what else do you call it, apart from sh*tty.

I too have managed to avoid the Natalie Imbruglias of the world until now and decided The Darkness weren't for me, no problems with The Thrills disc though...

Tried e-mailing the BMG site on the logo re Kings Of Leon but they haven't got an e-mail address yet, haven't bothered keeping receipt so what do I do? I've e-mailed the band management but I can't believe they're bothered!

Jamie,

If the KOL is on BMG, I have a good contact there, who was exceptionally helpful previously.

Be nice, but firm, explain the problem and request an unprotected version. You may have to go through a few CD swaps to ensure it's not a damaged disc, but I eventually ended up with moe than one copy of a previous disc Smile.

I can't find the phone no. for BMG at present, but look it up, and ask to speak to Stuart Hale-Brown, I didn't need an receipts etc.

Andy.

Jamie,

I have the Kings of Leon CD and quite a few other new copy protected discs.....My CDS2 skipped at exactly 9 seconds in to each track..!

I took my CDS2 in to my dealer today, had the PIC chip changed and a couple of new pucs to boot. All is ok now. Your dealer should be able to change the pic chip in a matter of mins. My dealer did not charge me...

Get hold of your dealer and arrange for the pic chip to be replaced....

Regards,

Simon

Are the new CD players already fitted with the new PIC chip ? Since when ? Does my Jan 2003 CDX2 need to be updated ?

Is it user replaceable ? My dealer is two countries away and it is a major thing for me to get the player back to him.

Thanks

Nana

Thanks for your suggestions guys, very helpful.

I've just called the dealer where I purchased the CDP from, some 5 years ago, who didn't have a clue what I was talking about and couldn't really help at all. Called the next nearest who was aware of the issue, said I would need to leave it with them for a few days while they ordered the part and would charge me parts and labour.

Seems like there's not much consistency here...and it's really narked me!

Any administrator comment on my best course of action?

Nick, is this available from Naim directly?

I'm sure I wouldn't have any problems installing

Regards and all that...

Check out the Technical Updates at

for details on how to fit the PIC

Unfortunately the Search engine does not give the ability to search back to all the discussions on this topic

Nick, absolutely right and just what I was saying to my other half (especially as I bought amps, speakers, cabling, then upgraded amps and cables through them too...)

Just a little bit of friendly asistance would have kept me happy and I would have gone back there (at least initially) for a new vinyl spinner shortly, but not now - so that's a £2-3 Grand sale they've lost for the sake of a small bit of PR and outlay

Jamie,
Ring Cymbiosis in Leicester. Peter and his crew are really helpful. I travel there from Notts 'cos of a similar problem with my local Naim dealer...
They did the pic mod on my old player(3.5) whilst I waited...
Whilst Naim try to keep on top of this there is no accounting for individual characters in differant shops!

will naim (NANA) supply the pic update directly to us owners or must we deal with the dealer for installation? Anyone know? david

Two more of today's postbag from Amazon came with the same potection today - My Morning Jacket and Cooper Temple Clause if anyone's interested.

Naim tell me it's a standard £35 supply and fitting charge for PIC on a 3.5 so that blows both dealers away who told me the fitting/labour is extra...
