LP 12?
Posted by: Action on 03 November 2002
Hi all , just testing the water on how to upgrade my trusty TT (lp12/ittockII/10x4).I will not be upgrading my cdx/xps/allae's,but my 72 will be upgraded to 52/super in 6-7 weeks and the 180 goes around Feb time. I have in mind the following:
1. New cart
2. prefix (but how this will work or improve my system I've no idea)
3. Geddon
Thx for taking time to read and any and all opinoins will be gratefully accepted.
Mike.

If you don't have a Lingo already, then a Lingo or Geddon would be a very big upgrade. If you already have a Lingo, then swapping it for the geddon (which I've done) isn't much of an 'upgrade', just different IMHO. I'd certainly get the table PSU sorted before a better cart/arm etc (your arm and cartridge are already very good - I'm a big fan of the Ittok). There should be quite a few s/h Lingos around since the introduction of the new model, making it a very cost-effective upgrade.

Hi Mike
I would suggest a different order starting with things that have the biggest improvement.
0. A good TT support (if you don't have one already)
1. Armageddon
2. ARO (or equivalent if you prefer)
3. Better cartrige
4. Prefix/52 (or equivalent if you prefer)
5. Prefix/Hi
6. Prefix/SC
Regards

Option 4:- Switch to a Roksan xerxes/ Artemiz/Shiraz!!
Replacing your 72 with the 52/super will show up the weakness in your arm/cartridge. The ittock/10x4 is a reasonable combination but with a 52/supercap/180 you can do much better.
However at the cost of upgrading the arm and cartridge you could perhaps replace your deck with the Roksan combination. In my opinion the Roksan has more insight and depth of sound compared to the linn combination.
Just my thoughts...!!

Thx for the quick reply .I currently use a stack of 6 isoblu's with the lp12 sitting on the top (then 72/empty/cdx/xps/180).Does the prefix sit in the lp12 and if so it must connect to my 72,so does it then go through my existing MC card???
Sorry for asking numnut Q's but I spend my time listenin rather than trying to understand how and why.
Cheers Mike.

It's mounted inside your LP12 and will be connected to your 72 via the PSU, but not the PSU of the 72: the Prefix needs it's own PSU except when connected to a 52. Existing MC-boards in your 72 should be removed. As for the 52: it's possible to connect the Prefix directly to an input which also delivers the power for the Prefix. Later you could add an extra Supercap to power the Prefix independently.

Cheers Jun for the explanation of the workings of the prefix.

Does your LP12 have the Cirkus bearing/shaft? Mine is at Martin Kleiser in Beaconsfield at the moment having this fitted - supposed to be an almighty upgrade for about £300. Colin Macey at MK tells me it is as important an improvement as the Lingo and as far as I am concerned he is The Man for Sondeks.

Naim theory is first the ARO, then the 'geddon. Linn theory is forst the Lingo, then the Ekos. To make the choice empirically, you need to compare a Lingo/Ekos LP12 to a 'geddon/ARO LP12 with the same cartridge.
Have fun!
Personally, I upgraded from a valhall/Ittok to an ARO and I'n very happy with my choice several years later.
Regards.
