DIN plugs and porky cables

Following Bob Neill's recent postings on phono sockets, I have to wonder out-loud why noone has tried the lateral approach - to make a fatter DIN plug. Maybe it would need slightly longer internal pins that might be bent to take pudgy cables?

Surely this wouldn't be rocket science??
