Don't give your real name ....

Posted by: Erich Weiss on 05 November 2006

I suggest on forums like this than you 'DONT USE YOUR REAL NAME'

or if you do DONT GIVE YOUR ADDRESS

I am putting this on the Hi-Fi corner rather than the Music room or Padded Cell [see later] ....

I see people giving their real names, location and list of equipment ...

With a phone-book I could get their address and burgle them ....

At least in the Music room it's just a list of records rather than equipment which is stealabe, portable and expensive ...

It is a real worry

Not mine, I'm ex-directory.

Ok Erich - sounds sensible advice from a 1st timer.

Is it possible to change one's real name to a fictitious name, without registering all over again?

Maybe a forum moderator can offer advice on this matter??

Cheers,

Rob

Exactly right. My names are indeed real enough, but as they are my middle ones they will never appear in the phone book. There was method in my madness form the start...

Hi All

A story relayed to me once was that a HiFi shop was broken in to, and the thieves took all of the cheap japanese HiFi and left all the Naim, Linn and Meridian stuff so don't count on the general community of thieves knowing their 555 552 500 from their arses. Remember Naim is just not known as a "quality" company in the real world it's only in our fantasy world of Musical nirvana.

Whilst I agree that it may not be so wise to give your name, address, work hours, and other times you'll be out of the house, I do think that it is of value to give an approximate location for where you live (eg. the county in the UK).

I'd like to see anyone try and nick anything from out here.......

Safety tip #2: You should keep your original Naim box. But if you MUST get rid of it, DO NOT leave it visible in the trash can or recycle bin.

Makes it much too evident for someone with a twisted mind...

I use my real name because I believe that we shouldn't hide what we may post behind a username. My phone number is ex-directory though and Staffordshire is quite a large county.

High-end hi-fi isn't easy to sell on if it's been nicked. The thieves seem to know that.
