N-Vi connection to a Sanyo Z4 projector via HDMI(DVI)

Hi All,

I have been enjoying the board for a few weeks in anticipation of receiving an N-Vi I now have on test (Thanks Naim and Tom Tom Audio). It really is an amazing product and has surprised even my cynical mates with its performance.

The crux of this post, well the N-Vi is driving a plasma screen through RGB SCART and a Sanyo projector via the component progressive output. This works very well and I am pleased with the pictures on both sources. In the name of the test and also to see if the picture improves further I would like to try the DVI output. I have seen some posts that have made me a little nervous about the use of the DVI socket particularly when using an HDMI adapter. The cable is quiet a long 20m QED as it runs through the roof void to the ceiling mount at the back of the room but it did work well with my old DVD players HDMI out.

I do not want to fry the projector or the N-Vi - is anyone running such a configuration perhaps even with the Sanyo projector? Any thoughts on whether I should try this or leave it with the component input?

Regards

Tony

Hi Tony,

20m is quite a long piece of cable for running DVI/HDMI (although technically the specs dont specify max length...).

I have personally run a 31m 'Bettercables' HDMI/HDMI via a DVI->HDMI adapter, running in to a Fujitsu Plasma. The component was also connected to a SIM2 projector at the same time. I saw no issues with this particular setup.

(saying that I do know some copper cables will not work at even 10m).

Bear these points in mind:-

-some (most?) screens have their 'ground' sitting at half mains voltage (this is especially the case with CRT SCART connections).
-the n-Vi is mains earthed.
-we specify in the manual's, that all devices should be powered down before connecting signal cables (beit audio or video)

Could you try the DVI to the plasma too? What make of plasma is it? I think you'll be OK if you power everything down beofre connecting. If you do get a screen of noise, don't leave it on for more than a few minutes would be my observation from my experience (although I don't definitively know what caused my problem, this seems a possibility).

I'd be interested in your results (projector and/or plasma)!

Thanks for the information I will go out and get a DVI to HDMI adapter today. Making sure everything is powered off and probably unplugged whilst connecting!

I'm afraid I can't try the DVI with the television as the Panasonic Plasma is standard definition and has no suitable input.

I will post my findings once hopefully all is operational.

Hi,

For information - I tried out a HDMI adapter (£19.99 Maplin) today without trauma! The picture is definitely sharper on the DVI output and looks really cinematic. I am not sure that on long pans you don't get a small amount of judder but it is so little I can't be sure it is even happening. I will be using the DVI connection going forward which leaves the component free for the wii :-).

Would you believe it sounds like one of my rears has developed a rattle will try it with another film! Is the gadget freaks wallet never safe...

Remember that Wii component is 720x480p, so it will be upscaled in your display device...but I'm sure you knew that already.

And what a great job it does! There is nothing quiet like four player Wii tennis on a 7ft screen...Bowling is almost life size :-) And the N-vi adds such sweet surround effects.
