Profitable Morning

for anyone in the area, on the St Albums Road in Watford is a record shop called Past & Present Records.

It has a sister shop most would probably miss around the corner.

Due to the fact the two wish to join into one shop the sister shop is selling every record at half price.

well never one to miss an opportunity I decided to walk up there today I came away with the following:

Ry cooder: Border Line, The Slide Area, into The Purple Valley, Jazz

Yes: Fragile, The Yes Album

Howlin wolf: Ridin' in the moonlight

He let me have the lot for 20 quid (much less than half price). I tell you now folks I am skimming through them at home now and each is in pristine condition. This is no exageration, they are literaly perfect not a single pop or crackle, I don't think the yes ones have ever been played.

One thing has again been proven to me, record even on a lowly rega 2 sounds so much better than CD.

Startship Trooper off yes album has so much more dynamics, when the drums slam they really do, on the CD they are just loud. This however could be down to the remastering on the CD.

anyhoo if anyone lives near, or even if you fancy a drive, this place has got to be checked out whilst they have this deal going. They have thousands and thousands of records and 12 inch, some in crap condition most in good. for gods sake they had one section called 'organ' with like 30 organ records.

you get the picture.

Congrats Gary,

You've scored some great 70s stuff, I used to love Yes album, Fragile, and the Cooder 70s stuff, like into the Purple Valley, Jazz is fine record too.

I've been looking for good copies of the Yes records for a while now, my last attempt was stolen by the British Post office!, anyway Enjoy!

I'm on a huge 70s binge this afternoon, Genesis, the Who, etc. On a CD v LP note I had a listen to a 1995 CD remastering of the Who's Next compared with an unspecified vintage french pressing on Polydor ... guess what CD is better.

I don't know what Ry was thinking on the jazz album, but its great.

Its like some osrt of freeky ballroom stuff, a bit like a restrained zappa.

good purchase!

That record is a tribute to jazz, He is/was always looking to preserve a tradition. I like Jazz, you'll discover that it's an audiophile favourite esp the Mobile Fidelity edition, it has a great feeling. Zappa ?, well it's all in the ear of the beholder, I don't see it that way. Talking of Zappa, I found 'You is what you is' for 4€ today, along with a Track records 'Who's Next', I'd been looking for one of those for a long time. I also landed Tom Waits 'Small Change' and 'October Sky' from U2, the four 15€, a bit expensive in the context of a communal jumble sale, but good finds nonetheless. I also managed Fragile for 2€, I tried to beat the seller down to 1.50€, but she wasn't having any of it razz .
