The Who @ Live 8

Forget U2, Killer et al - the Who did it for me - their set was amazing and showed the new kids on the block what it's all about.

It made my day.

The old boys were great weren't they. One of the best live versions of Won't Get Fooled Again I've heard.

"Hope I get old before I die" is what they really meant.

They were gr8. Still one of the bbest rock acts on the planet.

Was that Zak Starkey on drums? He's pretty good...

No, it was the mighty Steve White - normaly Paul Weller's drummer.

I couldn't believe my luck yesterday. I live next to hyde park so decided to have a wander to see how well the site was protected.

Cut to two hours later and a set of outright lies to the site security combined with a moment where running like Jason Robinson became necessary conspired to place me less than 100 metres from the main stage at the precice moment the Who came on.

This has to rank as one of my best blags ever. The Who still make a blissfull sound.

Nice one Simon!

IMO the Who sounded good on the TV so it must have been fantasic live...

Hawk - It was f....g great!!!

I was really happy that they put on such a good performance. For me the Who are often unfairly relegated when band comparisons are made. IMO Who's next is the best British 'rock' album ever made.

Glad Daltry made the mic catch and Pete didn't pull anything when windmilling those lovely guitar chops!!

Pink Floyd wern't too shoddy either Winker

That means you got into the VIP "Golden Ticket" enclosure. So that was indeed a blag of the highest order as they paid 600 quid a ticket and the security was fierce.

We were stood outside the fence off to the stage right. The verbal blag which got us into the 'outer' site no longer cut any mustard at this point. We tried very hard to obtain the wrist bands of anyone leaving the golden ticket enclosure but to no avail.

Then, too cut a long story short, an orange coated event staff started opening a big steel hinged door in the fence to allow some catering trolly to get out. This was all my girlfriend needed as she just pelted through the gap and sprinted about 50 meteres into the crowd in a very gazelle like manner. I followed and was required to do a little shimmy shammy to pass a security guard who had spread his body low with arms wide whilst hollering "no re-entry".

As I made a point where the crowd density ensured my invisibility I looked back and saw maybe half a dozen who had made it and were dispersing whilst a huddle of orange coats were forming a human chain to plug the gap and close the door.

I do feel very lucky to have got that far although we didn't stop there! we also knew that many of the 'golden pass' people had entrance to a party at the Grovenor on Park Lane. We tried but alas that was where we came face to face with some really no compromise security.

Oh well - better luck next time. Winker

Funnily enough the Who didn't quite work for me. I though Daltry's voice just wasn't quite there. They were pretty good, but floyd were superb

Well done Simon. I bet you wish you'd tried it earlier in the day. Or perhaps such antics require the cover of darkness.
Posted on: 06 July 2005 by Simon Matthews
Darkness and being a couple certainly aided the mission!

We got through the outer gates by saying that my lady's fictional little sister had been taken poorly and in the rush to get her to her mum outside the site we forgot all the paperwork necessary for re-entry.

It didn't work two times, by the third outer gate we got lucky. Perseverence and the ability to go ballistic because we were being prevented in getting back to where we had been watching all day (not) was the key.

Perhaps I could have got in 'under the cover of Darkness' - I could have grown my hair long, worn a leotard and pretened to be their guitarist. (sorry - very feeeeeble comedy).
