Really enjoying an old copy of blood on the tracks bought 2nd hand from a charity shop. Especially side 1. Fancy getting a new pressing - any suggestions?

Cheers

sorry no suggestions but wanted to say bloody good album. 34 years since I bought my first pressing. Sadly left at an ex-girlfriend's in Wales by my brother in the mid 80s. Tangled up in blue is absolutely one of my favourite songs

Hi,

There is a new version of this out in the not too distant future. It's going to include songs from earlier BOTTracks sessions (often reffered to as Blood On The Tapes). These sessions have Dylan just on acoustic on quite a few tracks, and personally I think they better some already absolultely wonderful songs.

It's a very personal album - You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go and Idiot Wind are masterfully written and certaintly show Dylan hurt and bewildered, yet still (more?) poetic. This is one of his greatest albums.

Glad you're enjoying it Andy! Can't answer your question but it's an album genuinely worthy of 'classic' status and a long-time favourite.

Best, Chris

yes i agree there is a real personal aspect to this album - obviously he can string words together but this aint abstract stuff. my wife is a long-time dylan fan and when i quote lyrics from idiot wind she doesn't believe me...

Idiot Wind is just stunning - 'They say I shot a man named Greg, and took his wife to Italy. She inherited a million bucks and when she died it came to me - I can't help it if I'm lucky,'

Buckets of Rain is a fantastic track too. Infact, sod it - the whole album is!!

No suggestions on pressings, just agreement that it's superb. I know Dylan fans often knock it, but Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts is a cracker imo.

Sorry to keep jumping in on this, but agree with Mat Cork. Another classic track. Oh god it's going to be a long night!

I have the 2003 remaster on CD and it sounds terrible. Is this just me? I saw a good review somewhere...

After Andy's post I went and listened to it again - 1st time in a few weeks at least. Yes, a truly great album, I agree with everyone here about the great tracks - all of them mentioned plus 'if you see say hello, you're gonna make me lonesome, buckets of rain'....but have to confess after 34 years I am still trying to like 'meet me in the morning'. Does anyone have any tips?

PS you can buy alternative recordings ['blood on the tapes'] in the bootleg series - they are interesting to listen to and the sleeve notes are very informative too.
I too think the sound quality on my CD doesn't sound quite right, a slightly intrusive harsh drum/snare [?] sometimes has to be ignored. I always thought I'd just put up with it - but maybe not?

I have the remaster that came in a cardboard cover over the plastic cd mount. It may be the 2003 remaster, certainly it was one of a series of Bob remasters. I thought it was rather good! To be honest I still usually just put on the 34 year old vinyl.
The first time I really listened to it was on a cassette some one had made of it while we drove from London to Norwich (and back!) to see John Martyn in concert at UEA. We had made the trip especially 'cos Steve Winwood was playing with him that night. Oh the memories! Stoned, long car journeys, triamph heralds, bob dylan and john martyn. Heaven!

Got a new 180gr pressing from Absolute Sounds last year, according to their site they've still got it.

Great sound, good as anything I own, doesn't sound dated at all. I confess to not being a huge Dylan fan, but this is one of my most played albums, bit of a masterpiece I reckon.

Ah should have said I'm in the UK, I guess. Doesn't seem to be on amazon - new anyway - the usual haunts seem to have lots of dylan but not this specifc one for some reason.

Thanks for your thoughts so far.

I recall when this came out and through the summer of 1975 the DJs on Radio Caroline just kept on playing again and again, 'Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts'. Eventually I relented and bought a copy, but on pre-recorded cassette since my BSR turntable was refusing to track anything with any degree of modulation. Years later I bought the original CD issue (467842-2) which was sonically dreadful - almost as bad as the PRC. More recently I purchased a copy of the 2003 reissue (512350-2) which sounds pretty darn good to me. Are you sure it's not your CD player that's letting you down?

And for what it's worth I don't think there's a duff track on the album - definitely Bob's best. I'm particularly fond of 'Shelter From the Storm'.

CB

Now enjoying sparkling new version which is a considerable upgrade from the second hand buy (also much more expensive, of course...). I hear the sundazed prints of some of Dylan's other albums are esepcially good - anyone know anything about that?

Thanks again fro your help guys.
