Is this the worst al*** ever?
Posted by: woodface on 08 August 2006
Thom Yorke - The Eraser. I just cannot quite believe how bad this is!! Atonal, self indulgent, tuneless, terrible lyrics. Unbelievably this has been voted on the Mercury Prize short list, have they actually listened to it? I bought this on vinyl played side one and cannot bring myself to turn it over. Radiohead have made two excellent albums before going all experimental and unfortunately throwing away everything that made them great.

I couldn't bring myself to buy it based on some of Radiohead's more recent output. I read a review of Eraser that said what a good album it was... the review then went on to say how good KidA was, so I chose to ignore the review altogether. I'm sure it floats the boat of some people, but this kind of experimental stuff sinks mine!

I thought The Bends was magnificent, but somehow never made the leap to OK Computer, which just sounded tedious to me, and I'd have to confess to never having heard anything of theirs after that. My own vote for worst record ever would have to go to anything by the Greatful Dead.

If you mean Grateful Dead, that'd be a real shame!
James
PS - as a lover of both 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer' (which I think is a fine album), I have felt a bit disappointed about 'The Eraser'.
(Perhaps it's reviewers reviewing things in the context of 'what's out there' at the moment, rather than an absolute scale? There is some dire stuff 'out there' at the moment - 3-5 years ago it was Travis clones (yuk), now it's Coldplay, David Gray and Franz Ferdinand clones (yuk; yuk; not bad in places), or old has-beens trying to scrape up a few quid for their old age from the festival and students' union circuits...)

Ouch! I had forgotten about Klaus. Bad musical flashbacks.

That's a brilliant record - especially Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

This is the worst record
It says so on the cover.
I want my baby back
Gotta have my baby back
I miss her oh so much
Cain't live without her touch
[wind, digging sounds]
I don't hardly know where to begin.
I remember, we were cruisin' home from the Beatles concert.
I'd had such a wonderful evenin' sittin' there watchin' my baby
screamin' and tearin' her hair out and carryin' on.
She was sooo full of life.
Then...
Well, we were about three miles from home when all of a sudden
it started to rain.
[thunder, rain]
And I do mean rain - I couldn't hardly see nuthin'!
Well, we kept drivin' for about another mile when all of a sudden
I see this stalled car right smack in front of me!
Well, I wa'nt about to slam on the brakes 'cause I didn't have
none to start to with.
So I swerved to the left, and what do I see?
Some mush-head, on a motorsickle, headin' right at us!
And I knew at last, me and my baby were about to meet
the leader of the...
[long crash] Wooooo-haaaaaa!
...pack.
Well, when I come to I looked around,
and there was the leader,
and there was the pack,
And over there was myyy baby.
And over *there* was my baby.
And waaay over there was my baby!
I want my baby back
Gotta have my baby back
I miss her oh so much
Cain't live without her touch
[wind, digging]
It's been many months now since that fateful night,
and you know somethin', I've tried, believe me I have tried -
but I just cain't make it without my baby.
So, I've decided I'm gonna have back her one way or another.
Oh baby, I diiig you so much. A-heh-heh!
[thud] Hot dang - pay dirt!
[creaky coffin lid opening, shuffling, creaky coffin lid closing]
[Muffled:]
I got my baby back
Now I got my baby back
I love her oh so much
Cain't live without her touch
I got my baby back...

No, it isn't. The Eraser, while a very long way short of being a masterpiece, isn't a bad listen.
The worst album ever made is Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, the most feeble, vacuous, sanctimonious, overrated and downright dull record it's ever been my misfortune to hear. In terms of sheer shiteness, full-on fatuousness and laughable pretension, it far exceeds anything even Sting has put out.
So there.

Franz Ferdinand topped my list of non-event albums. If I'm not mistaken their debut was listed for a Mercury (may even have won). Foolishly I read th reviews, was dragged in by them and rushed out and bought it (in more ways than one). I should have realised when the car's cd player refused to play it - such taste! The shop exchanged it and I set off for home. That particular cd didn't make the whole journey. Such unabridged absolute twaddle!!

Better than Astral Weeks?

Well I've seen her "video" ahem. Does that count?
I'm sure her album is bursting at the seams with creative originality, & we'll all be amazed at her musical talent, to go along with all her many other god-given gifts.
Oh, sorry, I forgot its not really aimed at me, I'm not supposed to get it, am I.
matt.

Put two masters of the guitar onto one project and what do you get?
The worst record imaginable.
Steve Howe and Steve Hackett:GTR. Rancid MOR pap.
And individually they are top class.
What a disappointment.
Heres a suitable panning:

I read a quote from Paris recently where she said she cried when listening to her album because it was so good. I am positive that I also would cry when listening to her album, but for very different reasons.
P.S Not that I would ever put myself in a position where I would listen to a Paris Hilton album.

Although I actually like Astral Weeks I was almost swept along by Kevin W's argument until he menthioned it is even worse than Sting - sorry a step too far. I still cannot fathom the sheer awfulness of 'the Eraser' though.
