An interesting theory?

Posted by: RICHYH on 25 June 2003

Reading the record reviews on this site over the last couple of weeks I think I might have found a pattern.
There seem opposite sides of the fence in People who are into Radiohead (me) and people who are into The Smiths (this must the only indie/punk/new wave band etc over the last 25years I cannot get into, I vertually like/love every other major musical influence except them. Although I think Johnny Marr is fantastic especially with THE THE.) Can anyone step forward and prove me wrong by saying that it is possible to love both Radiohead and The Smiths.

This is good science, testing a universal law by falsification.

I was about to step up, but then I realised I only like them both, as opposed to being obsessed by them.

I'm exceptionally fond of both too.

But neither are as good as Joy Division (or New Order when they were good).

Your theory sems to be like one or the other. I don't like either. Exception to rule?

Hi Kevin,
I wasn't going to mention it but you hit on something else I feel strongly about- I love Joy Division and hate New Order, I've always found they were an embarrasment to the memory of Ian Curtis with their wimpy pop trash. (Sorry but I'm not insulting you here).

Indeed I find them both utter crap as well.

some people had the audacity to suggest radiohead were akin to pink floyd, like no way man i'm shure.

I love Radiohead. I've never felt compelled to buy a Smiths album, because I haven't really enjoyed what I've heard so far. I can't stand Joy Division.

Well just to throw another spanner into the works. I love Radiohead, The Smiths, Joy Division and New Order.

Much as I'd like to prove you wrong...

Smiths - affected me in a big way.

Radiohead - nil points

I much prefer the Smiths - I think that Johnny was the best English guitarist for a very long time. Radiohead have had their moments - but Hatful of Hollow is more enjoyable and better lyrically -
btw did you know that 90% of the Smiths recordings used drum machines?

which Radiohead?

Not only do you find people divided over the Smiths and Radiohead, there's lots of peple who are divided over which Radiohead (pre/post Kid A).

That said, I'm with Simon - I like the lot of them! I do prefer post Kid A Radiohead. And sometimes you have to laugh at Morrisey's lyrics - 'oh poor me' etc., but Marr is a definite talent.

cheers

Still another, IMO revealing, test lurking here (yawn) is "which Joy Division?"

I actually like their early punk stuff, like "Warsaw" and the "Behind the Line" compilation, better than "Unknown Pleasures" or "Closer". JD were actually a good punk band, even though all the early recordings of them have dreadful sonics.

Of course, this means also that I prefer the Smiths to Radiohead, which I do.

Can't agree with you there mate. JD/Warsaw were a passable punk band, there was somethin spiteful (in an adolescent sort of way) about them, which I liked. The problem with the pre-Factory Sample stuff is that it's missing the vital extra ingredient that made JD great on record, ie, Martin Hannett's production jobbies. Thus Closer and Unknown Pleasures (and the three attendant singles) are by far their best work - nterestingly, I don't think you can seperate the two albums, as they're part of the same journey.

I agree with Kevin. Unknown Pleasures and Closer are the beginning and the end of a journey...

I am a big Radiohead fan, and there is something special about Sigur Ros.

I like both the Smiths and Radiohead...easy really.

I've got one for you though: can you love both the Velvet Underground and the Moody Blues, as I do?

I have no time for the Smiths - I can't understand how anyone can enjoy listening to their music (whilst respecting that everyone is entitled to their own tastes).

Radiohead ok - I have OK Computer and Kid A, but don't play them that often.

After posting that, I bought the Smith's "The Queen is Dead". The first time I listened to it, it didn't do much for me, so I set it aside. More recently, I found it quite good. And the other night, Vuk played me a couple of tracks from (I think) "Meat is Murder", and I enjoyed them as well. However, I doubt that I could become obsessed with them, having not appreciated them back when they were current.

OTOH, I'm obsessed with Radiohead. Oh yeah, and I still don't get Joy Division.

I like The Smiths and Radiohead, but wouldn't say I love either.

Joy Division and New Order, on the other hand, I love both, and even though I am not so keen on the post-Republic NO, I still have to say I love it because it's New Order.

I think Closer and Unknown Pleasures are quite different. Whilst I like many tracks on Unknown Pleasures a lot, I have to say that Closer is an absolutely perfect album, IMHO.

Smiths - "Now soon is now?" possibly one of the greatest songs ever
Joy Division - All great
New Order - Still great
Radiohead - drippy pretend music

Is Electronic's second album a sublime mix of the best bits or just a bit duff? I like it lots.
