Help please in recovering an iTunes collection
Posted by: John3 on 26 July 2009
My daughter's computer crashed which resulted in me having to do a complete restore of XP and all other programs. Fortunately she had back ups of her data files including photos but sadly did not have any back up of her iTunes files.
The only solution to recovering her entire music collection appears to be to somehow get it off her ipod, the only place it is stored. But...as I understand it, if she connects her ipod now to the computer the default will be to wipe everything off the ipod to match the current content of her itunes collection on the computer which is nothing.
So anyone know how to upload the ipod contents to the PC?

John if you google "transfer music ipod to computer" lots of options come up that look like they might help.

Whilst they don't make a song and dance about it, if any of the content was purchased from the iTunes Music Store, if she sends an e-mail with her account details they usually let you download the lost stuff. It's happened to me twice where I was between back ups and everything was recovered this way. It could be that content from other stores could be recovered the same way.
iirc you can set iTunes to manage songs manually, this would at least allow you to preserve content already on the iPod. It works like that with the Mac OS at least, not sure about XP.
Then, it's what Adrian says but you may not get much more help here as it may breach the forum rules. I tried one piece of freeware, which I trashed pretty soon afterwards as it did not work - try the iPod Lounge (iLounge)

Thanks both for the replies. I've just taken a quick look at the ilounge site (which I was not aware of) and it looks as though a comprehensive answer is avaialble there.
Thanks again.

I rescued my daughter's iPod files with "Purple Ghost" and found it simple to use.
