Plasma. Although the 37" LCDs run it close these days

Agree - Plasma. If you can get a Pioneer KURO 1080p you won't be disapointed. Picture viewing angle is as close to 180 degrees as is possible.

Having lived with a Panny plasma and a sony LCD x series and now a Loewe. Lcd all the way wipe the floor with Plasma. You have to really live with it to get it but the hi def pictures are by far better.

The latest LCDs from the likes of Sony, Panasonic and recently Samsung are better than plasma, but it's a matter of opinion really.
Plasmas have more of an immediate appeal by virtue of their sock-you-in-the-eye contrast and black level but they get a bit wearing after a while - it's not such a natural picture as LCD.
Add in the high energy consumption, weight and bulk of Plasma & LCD wins by a fair margin in my book.

We have a 37" Panasonic plasma, which I think is way better than any 37" LCD I have seen. The picture looks more natural to me, and black is black rather than grey.

My 50" Pioneer Kuro plasma wipes the floor with my 26" Sony LCD.
My guess is that a good 42" plasma will also wipe the floor with any 42" LCD
Cheers

From a practical point of view plasmas are very heavy and use a lot of electric.

Well you know what I am saying.
There is very little between them now and that is a fact especially with LED and the zone lighting thingy. Plasma is all but dead in terms of a technology and in the future no doubt us geeks can look back and bemoan its passing.

Some reasons plasma is being phased out are that the production and transportation costs are higher. The only telly that beats our plasma Panny's pic, imo, is an LED. But where do you stop? When we bought our 42" Panny, a 37" Samsung LED was 50% more expensive.

One doesn't "wipe the floor" with the other, the better products in both technologies are excellent. Currently have a 58' panasonic plasma but not sure it's any better than the 52' sharp lcd that preceded it.

errrr....mine does. The Sony is good, but.....the Pioneer is marvelous. Difference = "wipes the floor"
All IMHO of course, (but that usually goes without saying)

Sony is far from being "best of breed" don. Maybe try a more relevant comparison next time.
Or you could compare your Kuros (or is that panasonic these days?) with Chimei, Huwei etc etc . . .

I have been looking around for a 40 inch TV as well and having seen several Plasma, LCD and the latest LED TV fom Phlips, we decided on the Philips LED. Its a little bit more pricey than the LCD but the picture clarity was clearly better than the Samsung LCD.

Great choice. Absolutely terrific screen. And a new 46" version has just been announced. Saw it very briefly at Bristol and it looked every bit as good.

Its not that simple anymore. The picture quality is now getting much closer. But there are other factors you need to consider. Consider your room your Tv will be in. If it is a bright room and you watch Tv with the lights on or in the day time then LCD or LED is better. The colours and blacks on a plasma can look muted. If you watch in a dark room or lights off, i find plasma to be more natural looking. On the plasma front Kuro was king but is unavailable. The panasonic Plasma tv's have just missed out on being the best out there but the next generation of plasma's will be very good - as they start to use the pioneer technology. Also look at Brands, Samsung's Sound from its in built speakers is awful. You definitely need a home theatre system. Sony has had quality issues in regard to its inconsistent backlighting. Philips make great Tv's but you have to constantly fiddle with its settings. so probably confused you even more now
