Phil O'Donnell

Just wanted to post my sincere feelings of sorrow at the death of a very friendly sincere and hard working sportsman. He wasn't a great player but a decent one but that doesn't really matter...he was a really nice genuine guy who leaves behind a very young wife and family.
A sad loss.

Phil's death was indeed very tragic, especially at such a young age.I would have thought that clubs put their players thru regular medicals, to screen for heart conditions ect.

Yes, I recall Motherwell had another very young player (19 I think) who collapsed and died a few years ago.
Whilst one's heart of course goes out first and foremost to Phil's family, at a human level there must also be deep sympathy for his colleagues the players and backroom people, for the fans and club as a whole - indeed, with his exemplary record, for football in this Land.

I watched the press conference with Mark McGhee, the manager, and he was unmissably devastated.
Not sure it was a heart problem though. What I heard of in Scotland, was that it was likely to be an anuerism. They are not tested for routinely and very difficult to ascertain....Davie Cooper (ex Rangers and Scotland winger) also died of one.
Very sad indeed

Tomorrow's Old Firm game postponed as a mark of respect.

Such a pity that the SPL denied Dundee Utd the cancellation at the same time. Especially since the DU players were playing Motherwell at the time of his death on the field.

A real tragedy and my sympathy goes to his wife and family. It's just awful.
Not sure though why Celtic, his employers ten years ago, felt the need for postponement of the Rangers game when other matches are being played. It couldn't be related to injury and suspension to a couple of key players could it? Or am I just a cynic?

Two minutes silence maybe, but not to let the "Show Go On," is in my view to fall into false sentimentality rather than to demonstrate really useful sympathy.
In my view this might be done by playing some benefit matches for O'Donnell's familly.

Sorry, but it's not false sentimentality in any way shape or form....this article in the The Scotsman might provide some insight as well as answering your recommendation about testimonial matches or such like....and it will also answer Tom's question about whether he is a cynic in this case or not...
Cheers

Yip I did and it was a rhetorical question. Still don't understand why his employers of ten years ago felt the old firm match should be postponed. I've lost a number of close work colleagues and just had to get on with things. There was no justification for postponing the old firm game. Sadly an extremely sad situation has been exploited by Celtic FC.

Not moment onr did I think you were being sentimental. Celtic seemed such on the surface of it, but I will peer at the link a bit later.

The SFA should have postponed the whole programme and not just the Old Firm game. However, the death of a young player offers no justification? Maybe it's you who is exploiting a sad situation.

Oh! It would appear that Celtic FC,Rangers FC and the Scottish FA think there was every justification. But who are they, only the two most important teams in the country and their governing body.(Well apart from Hearts ,cant forget my roots)

my sicere codolences go out to the family and friends of phil.
all i hope is that some good comes out of a tragic situation in the fact that the sfa have announced better screening for this kind of thing in the future.
cant help thinking though that it could still happen again as a good friend of mine collapsed and died of heart failure during a squash match....he was 21 !! and as fit as a fiddle and had a company thorough medical just weeks before.
you just cant legislate for that kind of thing.
sad but true. scotty

Sorry Malky but this is BS. It's an obviously tragic situation but life goes on. As I said, I've lost some colleagues over the years and had to get on with things. Maybe this will help explain my suspicion and general detestation of CFC. Check fficial&client=firefox-a" TARGET=_blank>here for further info.

Frankly, the link you provide tells me more about your mentality and enthusiasm for indulging in anti- Celtic FC sniping on the most inappropriate of places. The veracity of the claims made is highly contentious but, in any event, child abuse is a heinous crime and its perpetrators must be made to account.
To use this sordid episode to introduce your 'detestation' of Celtic FC into a thread that was nominally a tribute to Phil 'O Donnel is abysmal and I will have no further part in it.
