Length of Naim NACA5

Posted by: Raphael on 22 May 2003

Hi there
My system, having gone through many changes in the last 24 months is now, 102/180, Linn LP12, Sugden CD, Shahinian Arcs. The system sounds really excellent and the preferred amp/speaker cable is NACA 5. However, the length that I actually need physically is about 2.5 m each side. However, I am using one that is about 5 m each side. I have thought about cutting the one that I have down or just buying a new shorter one but have been told that some people find that the system performs better when the length of NACA 5 is about 5m.
Has anyone any experience of this?
Many thanks
Raphael

There is a thread where lengths were compared, but I can't find it. However, I did find this:

NACA was designed for a nominal 10m length.

With Naim amps, the speaker cable is designed to be part of the circuit of the amplifier. According to Naim, the minimum length per side should be 3.5m. 5m is a very good length to have even if you end up coiling it up (heresy I know). If you need to move house the extra metres may come in very useful. You may as well just leave it as it is.

Hi Mekon and Frank
Thank you very much for your advice and information - it is great to sometimes get the response where the best thing to do is leave well alone!
Cheers
