Chord Anthem vs Nordost Red Dawn ?

Posted by: uem on 03 March 2003

Hi all,

After checking old posts, I couldn't find a suitable answer to this:
How does the chord ANTHEM interconnect compare to the Nordost Red Dawn on a CDS 2 ?
I'm currently using the Red Dawn and I like the transperency and detail. After changing speakers (Wilson Benesch ACT one to ACT 2) I find this just a bit too much of a good thing - Further, I'm likely to need a longer interconnect shortly - and the Red Dawn is rather expensive !!) .
Also, the German Stereoplay magazine gave very good marks to the Anthem.

Thanks for any feedback

What amplification are you using? If it's Naim, stick with the freebies.

I've tried both the interconnects you mention in my system (CDX/Densen...) and I prefered the tonal balance of the Anthems - more body and weight, and yet focused too. Red Dawn was impressive in a "hi-fi" kind of way etc.

I presume this bad experience with Anthem was in an all-Naim sistem.

In my mongrel sistem, Anthems had the opposite effect - they added drive, weight, definition and focus to finer detail.

As a counterpoint, having tried Steven's same Anthem interconnects in my system, it 'broke' the sound versus the standard Naim interconnects (though had more detail than the Naim interconnects - proof that it's not the amount of information that matters, it's what it means Wink )

Red Dawn has more body than Blue Heaven, for sure, but like any expensive interconnect you would need to try it for yourself. By the time you get to SPM and above, the interconnect seems to impart less and less influence on the signal (all cables having a deleterious effect, rather than an additive one) and as such you hear much more of what your source is doing, which may sound better and may sound worse, depending upon how good it is and how well it is setup.

As ever, auditioning is the only way if you want to go down that path. However, as others will tell you, there's no shame in sticking with the Naim supplied leads.

Off topic: Steven, you've been kinda quiet - didn't you get my email last week?

I'm afraid I didn't.

Thanks guys, for your replies,

Connection in question is from CDS 2 to a 82/HC, (hopefully soon replaced by a 52 ?! )
I'll try to get an ANTHEM demo cable via the Swiss distributor, as my usual dealer doesn't stock it.
As soon as I get a comparison, I'll post the result

<in cleese-esque voice> "don't mention the timing !". Cool

I am a big fan of Chord's cables - I think they do great things. However, my experience with the Anthem between Naim kit suggests that it would not make it into my personal system. Timing went off big style. YMMV. TC is right - an audition is essential where any interconnect is concerned.

Oh PS: I've never heard anything to beat the stock lavender interconnect between Naim CD and Pre.
