Which 50" Plasma ?

Which 50" plasma provides the best picture, both with HD feed and SD feed?

Cheers

Probably the best screens on the market at the moment are the Pioneer KRP A & M panels.

The A version comes with a media box the M version is a monitor panel.

They are available in 50" and 60" and are 64mm in thickness.

I've seen the screens demo'd and they are wonderful.

Hi Don,

I've just bought and installed a Samsung 50" for around 1000 and it is full 1080p.

The best bit about it is I previously had a 32" Samsung and the reception was dreadful (in digital) as sometimes the picture went chunky and sound went. I thought it was entirely the aerial, but this new 50" Samsung connected to the same aerial is totally flawless!!!

A brilliant product and the picture is stunning through Blu Ray in 1080p.

I understand there are Panasonics costing twice the price, but I dont see where the improvement is.

Good luck!!

hhmmm.......

all the mags rate the Pioneers above all else, but......

....we all know what we think about mag reviews for hifi, so why should they be any more reliable for tv sets?

OTOH, my dealer only seems to rate Pioneer and Lowe, and one or two other dealers here also seem to rate them, so there could be some truth in the Kuros.

But at £2,800 for the 50" screen, excluding speakers but including the switch-box......

.....is it really two or three time more watchable/entertaining than the latest descent Panasonic.

Difficult to A/B even in a shop, nevr mind a relaxed three-week trial at home Cool

Cheers

Don

...and I'd almost feel obliged to buy a PowerLine to connect it to the mains....

Straight out the box Pioneers always look inferior to Pannys and maybe even Samsung occasionally. However, set up properly, much like our other hobby, the results are stunning.

Is a 500 series CD player 3 times my CDX2/XPS2? Frankly, who cares? That's not the criteria for most of us here is it???

unfortunately, I am a creature of old habits and cost as well as value feature in my considerations of most things.

i agree this is a bit of a bugger and somewhat limiting, but..........

so I thought I would sound out any experiences on this ultra-reliable forum as to whether coughing up £2,800 for a Kuro really is worth it...

There's a company based in Borehamwood called TLC which has the Panasonic and Pioneer panels in a dem room for a side by side comparison.

All the screens are professionally calibrated so you can make a well informed assessment of performance.

Its well worth a visit.

If it wasn't for the fact that my employment looks a bit shakey I would not have cancelled my order for the 50" Pio KRP M.

Pioneer or Loewe if you have a lot of cash, Samsung if you're on a budget/think spending a fortune on a telly when you could spend it on your hi-fi is daft!

Hi there.

Unless your have the use for a guide dog, there are only two options for the 50" - Pioneer 5090H or the Panasonic - If picture Quality is te only issue it is the Pioneer, but if money is also an issue, the Panasonic comes in strong - I use my 5090H on the end of a Digital sat box - and to be honest I get impressed even by the picture on the news stations - but the Pana´sonics are very close - and often at half the price of the Pioneer

...Have to agree with the above ....,it's rare on this forum (or any forum) for there to be a pretty much "correct" answer but I reckon there is a straight forward answer to this query ...if cost isn't a factor the best 50" telly on the market IS the Pioneer Kuro ...If cost is a factor then a 50" Panasonic is a crackin' 2nd best
...I genuinely don't think there is any point looking at anything else.
I have had a Pioneer 50" (pre Kuro) plasma for 2 years now and it's picture quality on ALL sources is stunning.

I'd go along with the recommendations so far. Pioneer - if you can afford one. Panasonic - if your budget won't stretch as far. Both make excellent panels, but the Pioneer has an extra depth and a more three-dimensional image for me.

I can't say that you'd be disappointed with either. But the latest Pioneer is stunning.

HRCPP is right on with the additional comment that the latest generation Samsung is excellent choice for those on a budget as well. The Pioneer is exceptional really exceptional but most people/families would be thrilled with either
a Panasonic or a Samsung. Also purchase one as big as you can afford/accommodate. Err on the side of big!

OK Folks Pics of my Pioneer KRP500 A as promised
Posted on: 09 November 2008 by Don Atkinson
Are you totally delighted with your KRP500 A.

Did you set it up by yourself. Did you need to adjust the picture? Is it recommended that you get it ISF calibrated after a run-in period?

Hi Don
8G Pioneer plasmas are just stunning and now the 9G models are out you can get some cracking deals on them, even the 720p versions still beat any LCD i have viewed hands down IMHO.
But you really need to get it calibrated after about 300 hours of running in ti achieve the best performance.

We've recently received our KRP 500A and ... hmm ... yes, it's really rather good. It doesn't have the punch of older models, but it is far more forgiving of poor broadcast quality, makes a hell of a lot less noise when upscaling standard definition and blu-ray is divine. Buit it is rather expensive...
Posted on: 10 November 2008 by Symonds14
Reply to Don,
The KRP is a fantastic screen. I installed it myself and used the 'Pure' setting that is reccomended by the reviewers on another forum site.
I will be having ISF calibration done in the new year, but out of hte box, this is a stunning screen and work those extra pennies.
If you want quality, you have to pay the proce.

for me it would have to be the pioneers. Saw them up and running recently and they are amazing. i was left wondering where i was going to find all that money from!

the sony lcd's seem to get high praise too but i havent seen the newest ones so cant comment.

i have a samsung lcd myself (le40m86bd) as price was an issue for me too. it is very good, but not as good as the pioneers in my opinion.
