No DTS:Neo6 Music on n-Vi
Posted by: GreenAlex on 30 November 2010
Weird.
Finally got it all set up and for some reason I can select all the different DSP-modes except DTS:Neo6 Music.
After DTS:Neo6 Cinema it goes to Auto.
I am using a 3.1 setup.
Any idea why this is?

No n-Vi users here or just no one with any problems?
Or is this for some strange reason normal behaviour?

I have an nVi, I have no idea what neo 6 is. Is it from the matrix?
Why do you need it?

I am not sure if you are kidding or not

I think I found the problem and it seems there may be a bug in the firmware
As soon as I set the surround speakers to small or large, i.e. not "off", the DTS:Neo6 Music is suddenly available.
All other DSPs work in my 3.1 setup but DTS:Neo6 Music seems to require a 5.1 setup.
Is there a fix available for this?

GA, maybe worth e-mailing Naim. Perhaps there's a technical reason for this - i.e. the Neo6 matrix doesn't work very well without surround speakers?

Just in case you're not joking ...
It's some form of processing stereo signals into 5.1 DTS format. Tried it on CD - didn't like it. Here's what the DTS site says :
DTS NEO:6 Good news: All of your stereo CDs and older movies, even analog TV shows on disc and VHS tape, can now magically sound bigger and better! DTS Neo:6 makes full use of your 6.1- or 5.1-channel home theater system, filling the room with a natural sound field. Neo:6 technology also allows various sound elements to be steered to the proper channels separately, in a way which naturally follows the original presentation.
DTS Neo:6 takes 2-channel (stereo) audio and completely transforms it into up to six full-bandwidth matrix channels of surround sound. Your 6.1- or 5.1-channel system will produce six and five separate channels, respectively, to match your speaker layout. DTS Neo:6 can also generate a center surround channel from 5.1 material. The DTS Neo:6 capability is featured in all DTS-ES-equipped receivers.

Far less interesting for music. Very interesting for stereo TV as it really works great.
Although DTS:Neo 6 is older than ProLogic II, I prefer the sound it produces. I feel in a 5.1 setup the sound is more natural.
And reducing the amount of information routed to the center and sending more to the l/r enhanced the sound even more.
I couldn't find any technical reason why it should not work. So I guess I will have to eMail Naim's AV department and ask.

Oh crap, that would be why I have not tried it, I really don't like sudo surround sound, makes very little sense to me.
No I was not joking. I plumb the TV through the supernait not the NVi, though to be fair thats more to do with the amount if inputs on the nVi.

Well, for everyday reality tv it's not that interesting. If you watch shows like Supernatural or any other scifi or movies, then those DSP Modes make a huge difference.
I also find the stereo signal less natural than a DSP mode that uses the centre.
