Top ten al***s

Posted by: Philw307 on 29 March 2006

Hi, this topic has probably been started before, but I couldn't find anything too recent on the search, so lets start afresh and lets see your top 10 albums.

Here is mine to start -

1) Deacon Blue - Raintown
2) Radiohead - The Bends
3) Bjork - Debut
4) David Gray - White Ladder
5) Tears for Fears - The Seeds of Love
6) U2 - Achtung Baby
7) Van Morrison - The Best of (Vol 1)
8) The Verve - Urban Hymns
9) Keane - Hopes and Fears
10) Pearl Jam - Ten

Quite a varied selection, number 11 would of course be Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, but unfortunately I did say it was a top 10 and not a top 11.

Ten is too many.

Think of your top three ..... the three that you couldn't live without.

Post them on gut instinct, then go away and think about it.... and post them again.

Ten too many - personally I have difficulty whittling down to 100 let alone ten or three (one of the reasons why I haven't posted a list here). The list I posted on Fredrik's library thread contained just the classical discs I wouldn't want to live without and that numbers in the hundreds. It's a little academic anyway, fortunately nobody's ever likely to put a gun to my head and say 'you can keep three cds'.

Interestingly you said three cds! Not albums, not records. Semantics I know but it is telling.

Too scary to pick a top three ... I doubt it really.

Thanks, SJB.

You could always start with this (bargain-priced) sampler of various gamelan styles from Bali and Java:

Indonesia/South Pacific: Music from the Nonesuch Explorer Series

You'll get a little of this, a little of that, including a taste of the Ramayana Monkey Chant, a multi-layered polyrhythmic vocal tour de force unlike anything you've ever heard.

But most gamelan music is largely played by ensembles of metallophones (any percussion instrument consisting of a graduated series of metal bars struck with mallets), with each player playing only one part of a large interlocking multi-layered tapestry. In this, one can easily see how gamelan music had a significant influence on American minimalists such as Riley, Young, Reich, and Glass ... see the "Minimalism" thread for more info). Other instruments are used as solo accents (flute, bowed strings) and sometimes singing, but it's the magical shimmering of the multiple metallophones that gives gamelan its unique character.

By the way, the word "gamelan" refers to the music itself, the ensemble that plays it, and the physical collection instruments in a particular gamelan orchestra.

As I mentioned, Balinese gamelan tends to be faster and somewhat jazzy, while Javanese gamelan tends to be slower and meditative, but these are broad generalizations to which there are many exceptions. There are many different styles even within each country.

If you find yourself enthralled with gamelan music, as many people do upon first listen, you can add to the sampler with these two albums:

Gamelan Semar Pegulingan: Gamelan of the Love God

Music of the Love God ... need I say more?

Java: Court Gamelan

All these albums are on the Nonesuch label.

Gamelan music is music to surrender to, music to dream to, music with which your mind can fly to places you may never visit.

Enjoy!

Fred

Telling? I suppose so, in that it indicates I own relatively little vinyl (I suppose a factor of my age). Not sure how it impacts on the issue at hand. And if we're going to get pedantic, I don't think I suggested picking just three discs (of any kind Winker) was scary just that it was either impossible (or at least, impossible to do it in any meaningful way, for me, at least: I'd hate to be without a single Beethoven or Mahler symphony or the Ring, that's over 30 discs already and we're barely getting started).

You are just stalling. I think that you should make a decision.

As I said earlier just go with the gut feeling. There is no right or wrong answer.

Which Beethoven or Mahler symphony really does it for you?

And if you change your mind later that's fine as well.

Semantics? You want semantics? Hey, I got your semantics right here, pal! (insert emoticon here)

A CD is the physical medium on which the music is stored, just as an LP is. However, the word "album" will always be appropriate when referring to any collection of recorded music, no matter which physical medium is used to store it. After all, the word has been in usage since at least 1650, meaning "a printed collection of musical compositions, pictures, or literary selections," later to include photography, and subsequently audio recordings.

Speaking of which, a "record" is both a record of audio events, and the shortened form of the word "recording," and is also medium-independent.

So I will continue to rightly, and righteously, call CDs "albums" or "records," and I suggest you do the same.

Fred

But that's just the point, there are 3 5ths alone that really do it for me!

ah well.

Thank you, Fred, for sermonising on something which has bugged me for years! I get so annoyed when I hear people say "I just got the new album by so&so - er, did I say album? I meant CD hee hee!" ... If I were to try and set everyone straight on some commonplace mangling of the language I'd have no time for the rest of my life (and be considered a nuisance). I'm off to the record shop now ("You mean CD shop don't you? Tee Hee!").

I don't always contribute to these 'best of' type threads, but after some rather fine wine I think it's time to play some good music Smile

Strange Times - The Chameleons
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Undertow - Tool
Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
Underworld - 1st Toughest in all the Infants
Post - Bjork
Shhh - Chumbawamba
Betty - Helmet
Come Away with Me - Norah Jones
Braveheart OST - James Horner

Bit of an eclectic mix - Hardcore vs middle of the road soft jazz. Yeah, I'm wierd.

Like a recent thread here I'm struggling to listen to the really hardcore stuff without blood gushing out of my ears on my Naim system, but there are lots of changes I know are necessary.

Massive attack would feature highly but I like a mix of all of their albums. Protection is favourite but they're all outstanding. Teardrop ranks at number 1 for me. Their videos DVD is just outstanding.

Cheers

Fred,

Many thanks for your thoughtful and comprehensive reply.

Showing full confidence in your recommendations all 3 albums have been ordered.

I've also ordered Dreamhouse, which I have been meaning to do since the weather report thread but have been on a self imposed moratorium on cd purchases which with this order and my St Patricks Day purchase of various trad albums \i have now well and truly broken.

Thanks once again

Thanks to you, SJB. Hope you enjoy the music. Please report back when you've had a chance to digest it all.

Fred

I have ordered the sampler - it sounds very interesting. My children (10 and 8) had a great time when they played on a touring gamelan at school.

I think the kids will love it, especially the Monkey Chant.

My top ten, at this particular moment in time, is set forth below. I've refrained from including Live and/or Greatest Hits compilations, as somehow I think that is cheating.

In no particular order:

1. Born To Run - Springsteen
2. Darkness On The Edge Of Town - Springsteen
3. Hearts Of Stone - Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes
4. Who's Next - The Who
5. Bad Company - Bad Company
6. Marc Cohn - Marc Cohn
7. Busted Stuff - Dave Matthews Band
8. Aja - Steely Dan
9. Pet Sounds - Beach Boys
10. Night Moves - Bob Seger
10a. The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby
10b. Bring The Family - John Hiatt
10c. Scarecrow - John Mellencamp
10d. Dire Straits - Dire Straits
10e. The Stranger - Billy Joel
10f. Melissa Etheridge - Melissa Etheridge
10g. Songbird - Eva Cassidy
10h. Graceland - Paul Simon

OK, I cheated. It was tough limiting myself to two Springsteen albums (Nebraska, The Rising and The Wild, the Innocent & E Street Shuffle easily could have made my list).

If I permitted myself to include Live and/or Greatest Hits type compilations, I would have wound up with recordings by the following:

Springsteen
Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes
Dave Matthews Band
The Who
The Beattles
Paul Simon
Simon & Garfunkel
Bob Seger
Steely Dan
Creedence Clearwater Revival

Of course, my list likely would be different tomorrow.

Since it's only down to 10 albums, i'm thinking more in lines of albums i could not live without...

1. Mike Stern - Between the lines
2. Miles Davis - Kind of blue
3. Steve Vai - Passion and warfare
4. Richard Bona - Reverence
5. Remember Shakti - Remember Shakti
6. Eva Cassidy - Wonderful world
7. Tommy Emmanuel - Only
8. Chet Atkins & Tommy Emmanuel - The day finger pickers took over the world
9. Joe Satriani - Surfing with the alien
10. Sting - Ten summoner's tales (Played from track 2)
11. Martin Taylor - Kiss and tell
12. James Taylor - Live
13. Steely Dan - Pretzel logic
14. Vital Information - Easier Done than said

Could not do 10! After much thought, 14 is the least i could do.

I agree. That´s a very good song.

On the other hand that´s the only one I can live with from that album. Sorry Stan and
Fred...
The single version also contains a very good live version of ´every breath you take´.
(I´m not a fan of Sting though)

Ten top albums I can´t do, but here´s a ten top from one:

Bowie´s hunky dory, ziggy, aladdin sane, diamond dogs, station to station, low, heroes, scary monsters, buddha of suburbia and last but not least, heathen.

These kind of threads creates very good shopping lists. Thanks to all!

Fred. I agree that Indonesian Gamalan music is very beautiful. Years ago, I had the pleasure of listening to a Gamalan orchestra in Jakarta (shadow puppet play) and Jogjakarta, as well as the monkey dance in Bali. When this music is heard in the intended outside setting, at night in the tropical environment, it is a great experience. It is an experience that simply cannnot be translated to a recording. Western music (whether jazz, classical, or pop) on the other hand lends itself very well to the recorded medium. Just my thoughts, and I'm sure influenced solely by my experiences in Indonesia
