Rega Jupiter

Posted by: redeye on 27 November 2003

Anyone on the forum have any views on the latest incarnation of Rega's top player?

On my travels I've encountered varying opinions..

"Hardly worth the extra coin over a Planet"

"Makes the Planet sound like a toy CD player"

"If you're spending that sort of money you'd have to be a complete cock not to buy a CD5"

etc etc etc

Chime in if you've heard one. Love it/hate it whatever

If you still have the 32/180, you're a complete cock not to get a CD5 for the same money, but you know what that means.

You'll need a hicap for the 32, a flatcap for the CD5, some new speakers, maybe a fraim or two.

my former dealer (sadly now closed) used to run Naim and Rega. He used to say that the CD5 and Jupiter were roughly on the same level, but different. It is a matter of system synergy and he put CD5 with Naim amps and Jupiter with Rega amps.
So if you have Naim amps.......

The Rega Jupiter has an excellent sense of timing. In the right system it can sound like a giant killer. However, it is a bit of a one-trick pony and after some time it's possible one feels one is being shortchanged in other departments.

Given the price, you'd have to consider the competition.

Frank.

Jupiter is fast and clean with razor sharp timing. When I was auditioning in 2002 it made most of the other stuff under £1000 sound like mush. The CD5 seemed better able to do more things well, as opposed to a few things brilliantly - as Frank mentioned. I would have found the Jupiter too tiring over long periods and I suspect that it wouldn't have done well on some of my more "difficult" CDs. It wasn't difficult for me to chose the CD5 in preference and I'm glad I did, because it was only later I discovered that there were these things called Hi Caps and Flat caps that could be added....

I have a Rotel 965 Discrete, which I was considering replacing.

I visited my local Naim/Rega dealer who suggested a Planet. I found that this was not an improvement on my Rotel. Tonally similar.
Next up was a Jupiter. This was better than the Planet, but not a huge leap forward. The improvement was not worth the extra £500.00 or so. IMO.
Next up was a CD5. Very different from the Regas, I can see why people like it, but I personally thought it was a bit bright. The dealer thought the Rega speakers where to blame. (Naim Olive amps also used).
Next up was a CDX (I think that was the model, £2400.00). This sounded superb. After hearing this, there was no way I was going to buy any of the previous three models I had heard. But I did not want to spend £2400.00.
I still have the Rotel, but I will soon add a Trichord clock.

that had me in stitches! The 5 is quite a few more notes over here. I broadly agree. However, if one's looking for a better player than the planet, the Jupiter is in another league and deffo worth the money. A fine player. Redeye's probably resisting the force that's basically going to draw him back to a CDX, and the Jupiter is a very musical stop along that route. Wink

Ah ha, rereading redeye's post, he says "that sort of money", not "the same money".

Understood Wink

Oh really? If I could find a CDX that would actually play my CDRs I might consider it Wink
Also its nice to hear Moon Safari on the Planet..the CDX wouldn't look at that one either.
Whizz..clunk..no disc...ARSE!

Air Moon Safari?

My non-PICed CDX played that one OK...
Posted on: 28 November 2003 by redeye
Correct Mike..the 3.5 that preceeded it wouldn't play the Air album either. I always put it down to 'puck related issues'.

There are other albums that the CDX wouldn't play...probably around a dozen in total. Odd Confused

ps..tried a friends Moon Safari..same result

Probably the Austrailian pressing?

My non-PICed CDX read everything, but did skip on most protected "non-CDs".
My CD53 on the other hand plays all kinds of non-CDs, but doesn't read 4-5 regular discs in my collection...

My moony safari sounds just fine on the cds2 red. Go get the CDX back Wink

my CDX, CDS2, and now the CDS3 all play Air's moon safari with narry a problem. Perhaps your longitude has something to do with it? Cool

Yeah, one albums a good enough reason to deny yourself the music of, oh... the rest of your CD collection? Big Grin

The Jupe makes sense...

PS - no PIC upgrade in CDX, or CDS2.

I demmed the Jupiter versus the CD5, the Jupiter was OK but the CD5 brought the music to life. On the track "Deta City Blues" by Michael Brecker there is a piano playing what sounds like random chords on the Jupiter (and on my previous CD player), on the CD5 it became immediately apparent that the chords weren't random and were part of the music. When you add the fact that the CD5 can be updated with a *CAP at a later date then there really is no competition - the only thing better about the Jupiter is its styling.

I'm starting to get the feeling that the Jupiter is OK but hardly worth the effort.

Everyone likes the Planet because it makes music for naff all money but if you want better you get your skates on a get a CD5(i)?

Bit of a shame for Rega...maybe its about time they bought out a CDS3 killer for a third of the price. That'd stir things up a bit Big Grin

Crikey - that was a quick dem!

So can we get your listening impressions before you move off in the mer-mer-mer (I can't say it) direction?

redeye,

The Jupiter is worth the effort! I'm sorry I may have damned it with faint praise. It really is a fine player which ought to be considered in the mix. I have met a few people who have taken a Jupiter over anything else at the price (and then some).

Frank.
