Should My Supercap Ring ?

Posted by: Ade Archer on 29 June 2003

I took my kit apart last night to give it all and the Fraim a proper clean and upon re-assembly I noticed that when I tap my fingernail on the top of the Supercap, it doesn't 'ring' like all the other boxes, in fact it doesn't ring at all, just a dull knock. I wouldn't have thought much of it if the XPS and 250 didn't give a clear 'ring' when tapped, and they probably contain similar components inside bolted to the bottom of the chassis such as transformers etc. I know how important 'tuning' is to Mana racks for example for them to perform correctly, so my question is, should the Supercap 'ring' or not when tapped, and if so, why doesn't mine.

You've obviously got old kit; pre the little known Naim/Nokia alliance.

After closer inspection, I've found that I needed to loosen the internal transformer bolt, rotate the transformer slightly to re-align the 2nd bolt hole for the externally fixed bolt, which wasn't central to the outer hole before re-tightening the transformer.
It appears because the hole wasn't quite central the bolt was putting a slight stress on the case
It now rings just like the rest! Smile

Ade,

Apparently, the 5cm damping strip stuck on the back panel of big boxes should should be slid up to stop the case from ringing. See here.

I never used to be able to tell a difference, but after improving my setup considerably at one point I think the bass was a bit more prominent and controlled with the dampers up -- might have been my imagination, though.

I think either Bob Edwards or Ron Toolsie came up with the idea of putting ice hockey pucks on top of the units to stop them from ringing. They are available from sports shops for around £1.50 each.

If I play my system loud, which I'm prone to do, and then mute a cd in mid track I can hear a definate ring comming from the equiptment. This must be detrimental to the sound. Time I bought some more pucks!
