your ears, how often do we get them checked.
we spend xxxxx amount on hi fi,upgrades.tweaks etc. but how many of us actually take care of the instruments we listen with?
what do other forum members do in regard to looking after their hearing?

The best way is to swim everyday. Good for your health, stay fit and get the ears clean at the same time.

Earplugs!
I use them frequently - if I'm clubbing, when I'm driving my (stupidly loud) car and definitely when doing DIY - just generally when the ambient noise is pretty loud I pop in some earplugs.
I use the flesh coloured ones from Boots, and cut them down to half length. That way you get twice as many for the money and they don't stick out and look obvious!
Cheers!

Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have. Be careful how you spend it lest others spend it for you.

Broadening this subject a little...
I think WE are the most essential ingredient to a good sound. I think 'upgradeitis' comes from someone feeling generally down and not getting that majic uplift from their sound system, and then going into a flat spin looking for that majical thingy to 'make it like it was'.
Look how often somebody you know just doesn't hear the beauty in the reproduction of the system like you do. Why? I believe they just haven't learned how to yet. I feel that is some evidence for the above supposition.
I had an experience where I had the worst day imaginable. I went home to listen to Natalie Merchant's Ophelia album, which is a real favourite...and hated it. It souded flat as a turd. Then I realised I had the problem, cause I listened to it the previous day and just about cried with emotion. Nothing in the system had changed. I had. Next day I had another listen and it was back to awesome.
Now if I get the urge to tweak I run a mile to the local CD store and buy music. Then I don't screw up my system.
Anyone else had similar experiences?

I've recommended this tweak before but it really is a cracker and Free on the NHS. Get your ears syringed regularly. I first got it done a few years ago after problems with a recurring ear infections and now get it done every 6 months or so by a friend who's a practice nurse. You really will be amazed at just how clear everything sounds.
Added. Actually it's no longer free but a nice bottle of white wine is always appreciated.

Earplugs - I concur
I ride a motorcycle and always wear ear-plugs.
Take a pair to live gigs in case things get too loud.
If you're travelling on the tube to get to a Hi-Fi audition or a show, it's a good idea to use ear-plugs to prevent your ears being 'dulled'.
I get 50 pairs of the 'Classic' type for £10 from:-

Much cheaper than getting ripped off for 3 pairs in Boots for some ridiculous price.
