Have you ICEd your mobile

Posted by: Derek Wright on 14 July 2005

received this from a friend in the NHS
"Following the disaster in London . . .

East Anglian Ambulance Service have launched a national "In case of Emergency ( ICE ) " campaign with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word " I C E " in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".

In an emergency situation ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's so simple that everyone can do it. Please do.

Please will you also email this to everybody in your address book, it won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.

For more than one contact name ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc."

Makes sense.

I have had numerous emails on this subject and whether it was for real or not it makes sense.

The ambulance driver who came up with the idea was on Radio 4 yesterday morning. Apparently it is an idea that is catching on.

He said he was constantly being called out to emergencies where the casualty was unconscious but had no personal details or contact info on them. He noted however that most of them did have mobile phones which he would then have to wade through looking for names such as Mum, work or home etc etc

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Yes I had the same e-mail at work.

Sounds like a good idea but people do it already with 'Home' in their phone. The police have used that for years.

We have done our mobiles here. As an aside my wife changed her "Mum" to her name to try and prevent her getting a call in an emergency.
