Compatible batteries for Nikon D70

Posted by: Alan Paterson on 10 November 2006

I am looking to get a couple of extra batteries to take to New York with me in 10 days. I was looking on ebay and saw lots of compatible batteries for sale. Are these safe to use and are they any good? If i was able to use my charger i would but i assume i can't use it there (the mains lead is detachable but are the internals designed for the UK voltage)?

You might be able to get the batteries duty free quick easily on the way out.

The charger will say on the bottom whether it's suitable for 110v, FWIW my D80 charger is.

Hi, it just says 240v on the charger.

I'll bet you can get a cheap gizmo (possibly at the airport) which will let you plug a 240V UK-plug device into a 110V US-style socket.

Just to give you an idea what to look for - something like Plug 240V UK item into US socket off eBay

I purchased my D50 from ebay and its been a charm, 10 quid.

I also got a replacement battery for my iBook on eBay, I though I would get sent a generic one, turned out to be genuine, for fully 50 quid less.

You're leaving in 10 days? Avoid the angst of ebay (quality, DOA, delayed in transit) immediately before you travel, go to the shop and buy one genuine Nikon batty. If you're burning through 2 batties in a day, you'll also be carrying a Storage Array Network with you to cope with the huge amount of shooting, or are going to spend all your time uploading to the interweb. Or you have 10 1GB memory cards for a few days away.

If your charger is the nikon MH18a (as is my D70 charger) it's multi-voltage. You'll just need an adaptor plug from UK plug to US socket - pick one up from Boots, or at the airport (or at Boots at the airport!).

Charge your batteries every day while you're away. With one spare, you should be covered.

Besides, why over-capitalise on batteries for your D70 - you'll probably be upgrading to a D80 while you're there! Go on, you know you want to. Uses a different battery!

hope that helps.

Alan,

I have a generic spare battery for my D50. I have swapped out a coupe of times and there is no difference to me. I bought mine from an ebay store and it arrived within 2 or 3 days and cost a fraction of the price Nikon charge.

The charger I have is an MH18a and will support 100-240V, 50-60Htz so all you need is a travel adaptor if you have one of these.
