Pink Floyd may get back together for Charity
Posted by: Diccus62 on 16 October 2010
As a great fan of the overblown masterpiece 'DSOTM' I report via the BBC that...................... the chaps may sing some songs together
Posted on: 16 October 2010 by Diccus62
I'll just give the 50p to charity and save the £79.50

Proper line up -1. Too little, too late, IMO.

Is that the Ministry of Silly Walks?

It can never be the true PF - Syd and Rick are no longer with us.
Posted on: 17 October 2010 by Tarquin Maynard - Portly
Well I'd go, which will surprise nobody.

But without Rick Wright it isn't Floyd.
Posted on: 18 October 2010 by mlauner
Despite the loss of two members this would be an excellent show imo.

Without Syd it isn't really Floyd for me - I saw Floyd twice: once at Chelmsford where they were stunning IIRC and once at Knebworth with Gilmore doing DSOTM, which was entertaining enough.quote:Originally posted by Steve O:

However, just play Interstellar Overdrive from the Live in London and you can see what a great band they were.
Why don't they play this at gigs

Because nobody would go

But seriously and not wanting to be lambasted, Floyd for me is 'Meddle' to 'The Final Cut'. I don't like the earlier stuff and I didn't like 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason' or 'The Division Bell'. That run of albums by such a great line up is what I think of as Pink Floyd, in the same way Deep Purple Mk2 is considered to be the best line up Purple ever had.
To me Pink Floyd without Rick Wright is much the same as The Who without Moon, Led Zep without Bonham and AC/DC without Bon Scott.Good but no longer awesome, though arguably AC/DC have been more successful after Bon Scott (though nowhere near as good IMO).
Regards,
Steve.

Quite a few would agree with you. I played Meddle yesterday and it was superb. Cannot say that about the Syd stuff myself - I can enjoy it but it does not have the greatness of the Meddle to Wall period, all IMHO. I guess you had to be there. I do like The Division Bell though. (playing a bit of Saucerful now though)

Hmmmm ... I still like the first three Purple albums as much as their later stuff if not more; I'm probably the only forum member who prefers DP to non-Syd PF, but The Shield is an incredible track. I listen to DP much more than PF these days.quote:in the same way Deep Purple Mk2 is considered to be the best line up Purple ever had.
Piper At The Gates of Dawn is one of the great albums - the later PF while good never reached these heights of inventiveness for me. I prefer Syd's two solo records to the PF stuff made around the same time; though I do really like parts of Atom Heart Mother and The Wall.
So there'll always be a difference in views and I know that some folk on this forum think Bowie still made great albums after Hunky Dory and that his debut wasn't his greatest recording. And there is one forum member who loves neither ELO nor ELP .....
I hope the remaining PF members do a gig for those that want to see them, but I'll not be in the queue. I'll sit home and read Chapter Three.

I agree with that except that some of it is not just good, some is great.

Having seen seen the David Gilmour lead version twice and Roger Waters once in concert I'd go at the drop of a hat to any reunion gig. It was a great pity that Rick Wright passed away as his playing on the Gdansk Live LP is superb but I'd trust Mason/Gilmour/Waters to put on a show worthy of the band's legacy.
Not only did Pink Floyd make some of the best albums ever recorded, they could always be relied on to deliver the goods live, often with spectacular results. I feel sure any such event would be enormously popular. Even youngsters will have seen them at Live 8 and understood what all the fuss was about.
The London 66/67 had completely escaped under my radar so I've just ordered it. Thanks, munch.

Whatever happens we have a long wait. Roger has the small matter of 100+ Wall concerts to get out of the way first.
My heart hopes yes, but I am far from convinced it will happen. Maybe I should ask DG next time I see him round these parts.

Gulp another one eh - oh well we can't all like the same things: one of the guys on the forum uses a valve amp (unbelievable I know: do these guys like distortion) .... I prefer both to later PF, though that does mean to say I don't like PF: it's just that apart from Piper they didn't really have an Eldorado moment, but few have and they didn't have a BSS moment or Machine Head moment or even a Lick My Decals Off Baby moment or Every Good Boy Deserves Favour moment or London's Calling moment.quote:Originally posted by Steve O:Make that two.quote:Originally posted by ROTF:

The 70s was packed with great music of which PF were indeed a part, but there are quite a few bands I prefer. The Wall is my favourite PF 70s elpee.

I have a friend who loves big events and he bought tickets for Anaheim Dec 12. I saw them do The Wall back around 80-81 in LA Sports Arena.
The first time I was with 3guys I was uncomfortable with, this will be more fun with this friend.

or London's Calling moment.
I remember reading a review on London Calling in which the reviewer said something like "If aliens were to land on earth, rather than try to describe what a great rock album sounds like I'd just play them London Calling".
London Calling gets a regular spin at chez Steve.
