"Where" I think it is..

One of my favourite Ron Carter performances is on the Joe Henderson State of the Tenor recordings, an absolute masterclass of bass playing.

Thanks for your replies!

"Where?" is from '61 with Eric Dolphy and Mal Waldron. That's nice.
To name my most favorite album would be an extremely hard decision. After all it probably is "Piccolo".
Other very remarcable albums are: "1+3" and "All alone" (which is also very curious).
I like the V.S.O.P. recordings as well.
This spring I tried to get the newer album "Holiday in Brazil" via Amazon, but after 7 weeks quitted the order. Although it is an import and therefore expensive I wonder if it's worth...

Hockman,

RC as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet or V.S.O.P. Quintet is a great deal. From the RC / Jim Hall Duo recordings I like "Telephone" best.
But RC as a solist "par excellence" can be heard on his solo album "All alone". If you don't know it yet, you should discover it!
Saw Ron Carter live in Vienna 1999, which WAS a life event for me.
I'm a fan of Charlie Haden too, Dave Holland is placed on second row for me, because I prefer acoustic bass.

Huh? Holland plays acoustic bass almost exclusively, especially these days. Not only that, he's one of the best, with a very warm, fat, woody sound. If you dig Haden, you should dig Holland.

The last couple of Charlie Haden records I've bought have been kind of boring.Probably the curse of the Naim label again! Watch out Fred.(joke!!)Come to think of it I havent played that last Dave Holland Quintet much either, but that's the curse of Manfred Eicher .

Ron Carter has a very particular loose, almost elastic sound and is great with the bow. Anyone else think this?

ROn Carter did a rather nice (and I mean NICE -verging on elevator music) CD with a bossa theme some time back. It's no groundbreaker, but the recording's nice and it introduced me to Bill Frisell, so can't be all bad. But as a sideman, he's the boss IMO.

Agree about Haden, bought Nocturne and was underwhelmed by it's similarity throughout. Again, a NICE CD but so what.

Holland is at least a bit more daring, if a bit loose and meandering with that Trombonist whatsisname (whose brother played guitar?).

Right, he IS the boss IMO.
Haden, Peacock, Gomez and Holland are OK.

...also a nice ECM I picked up recently is Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Frisell and Holland..."Angel Heart" or something...more of that "slightly lost meandering" stuff, but good nonetheless. On the subject of Holland, was listening last night to Joe Henderson's Musings for Miles. The bass on that record is phenomenal.
