I now have got a full naim system:

Linn Kan2
What should be my next upgrade?

Thanks a lot.

If I had a nice well balanced system like that I'd probably just buy lots of lots of CD's.

If I did have to do something to it I'd probably ditch those horrible bandwith limited speakers which are obviously strangling your system and replace them with something decent... big grin

Wonder if that bait will catch anyone...

Mmmm, bait...

If this system were mine, and I had loads of money:

1) Definitely a better CD player as it would seem to be the only source - I will be honest I have never liked the 3.5 very much, even with a Hicap attached. The CDX would be a good starting point, though the CDI, CD2, and CDS1 can be really good S/H buys. A CDS2 is pretty much good enough for Kans! I would be very happy with this system just by upgrading the source, the stuff below IMHO is not needed. Just max out the source.

2) Preamp to 52, great that you already have the Supercap.

3) Power amp to either 250 or 135s.

4) Then, and only then do the Kans seem slightly weak, though there is next to nothing this side of SBLs worth thinking about to replace them...

Tony.

If it were me:

1. Second hand CDS1 (£2k) = upgradable to CDS2
2. s/h SBL's (£1k)
3. a 52 when funds permit.

I would do CDX or CDS1, then an 82 (or 52, if you can afford it), then new speakers. The 180 will suit you fine for quite a while.

Thank u for your advices. However , my retailer told me a cd3,5/Hicap was quite as good as a CDX.
It doesn't seem to be your point of view.
Could you tell me more about that?

Thanks in advance,
Yours trully

I had a 3.5/hicap on home loan before buying a CDX. I don't think there's any comparison really, the CDX is better by a large margin.

About the speakers...I've no problem with Kans, I used to own a pair. I agree with Tony that the Kans aren't actually weak, however, I do think SBL's are much better. As usual, get a dem' and decide for yourself.

I would sell the 3.5/hicap and buy:
CDX
Then sell the Kans and buy:
SBL's
Then sell the 102 and buy:
82
Then buy:
XPS

Salut Ugo,

How is it possible to upgrade a cds1 and cds2?

Charles

Posted on: 20 June 2001 by Michael
Charles ..this can be done by sending your CDS1 to Naim.

For £1600 they will upgrade your CDS1 to a CDS2 and modify your Burndi lead to work with your existing CDPS.

If you can pick up a second hand CDS1 ...this is a good way to get to own a CDS2 which is a great improvement on the earlier model.

It would be well worth paying the extra for the new Black burndi.

I have just had such an upgrade done and I am expecting the equipment back very soon

...swapping the power supplies to favour the source; ie:

CD3.5/SuperCap
102/HiCap

Should theoretically be better in some ways, or possibly many. Go on, try it!!

Curious... How do you hook up your Supercap to your 102? I am thinking of buying a Supercap as a step towards a 52 but can the Supercap drive the 102 digital and analogue circuitry?
