Do TT cartridges degrade over time?

I have a 20 year old MC cartridge. Do they degrade over time and have they improved significantly since the early 80's.

Thanks again

Whaddya want? Information?

In order: Yes, yes, not at all Wink

Seriously, a 20 year old cartridge needs to be examined RIGHT AWAY to see if it is worn - or rather, how badly worn it is, assuming you actually use it. If it is in poor condition you could be damaging your vinyl. Its not just the tip that wears; springs, dampers etc l degrade over time

IMO there have been some fairly major strides in cartridge technology. Go and have a listen - but get that MC examined as a matter of urgency.

I am doing a dem of an Adikt vs a DV10X5 soon. I wondered what life expectancy either has, and whether they can be 'refurbished' after that period? As someone pointed out recently, a cart that lasts half as long costs twice as much.

Mekon,
Since my next cartridge is likely to be an Adikt or a 10X5 (which would be bought from different dealers) I'd be very interested to read your comparison of the two.

I think the Adikt is a good "fail-safe" cartridge, which is well worth a listen. Since I always attributed my unusual loathing of the 10X4 mainly to its plastic mounting lugs [it's the only cartridge I know that can sound simultaneously muffled and screechy] I am optimistic that the 10X5 (with its metal mounting plate) will sound a lot better...

BTW, doesn't the Adikt have a replaceable stylus unit?

PS - Number 5, sorry we seem to have hi-jacked this thread so early but Mike's answer is probably the only answer you'll need. Smile
