Hoe do I connect my Naim system?
Posted by: Sundance on 12 January 2004
Which SNAIC leads do I need to connect a 72, 140 and a CD3.5 (i.e. 4 pin / 5 pin etc)
When I purchase a HiCap how should change the connection?
Many thanks.

And the wise man said to his young apprentice...
"Go into the world and seek out he who is known only as "The Sticky One". Only then can you join the ranks of the enlightened"
Go now young Sundance and seek the knowledge you require.

I have done that Mr Weekes and there is no manual on the 72!

Just checked my 72 manual. Assuming you don't have the oldest hicap series:
Hook up the 5-pin DIN between hicap socket 3 and the preamp. Hook up the 4-pin DIN between hicap socket 2 and 140. This is common to Naim equipment except for x52, 250, 135.
Not sure about the interconnects.
Womder where the older manuals went...I, too, am pretty sure they used to be on the site.
Regards.

I've NEVER been able to hear the differences between grey and black SNAICs.

Sundance,
You're welcome! Actually, when I saw the date of your query I regretted writing - surely you had found the answer by now.
Even when the forum gets sticky, Naim and Naim dealers are pretty helpful, even to users who bought used stuff from other sources. They all figure you're gonna upgrade anyway, so they try to be nice.
If you emailed or called Naim or a London dealer, you probably would have gotten a quick, accurate reply.
Regards.

Are you sure, I think you'll find it's socket 4 on a HiCap to pre-amp.

Thanks again Phil. Yes most forum members I have found to be very helpful.
Thanks Geoff too, that was just what I was looking for.

Basil and Sundance,
Holy cow! I blew it!
Perhaps the most useful comment I've made here is that Naim is generally very helpful....If one clicks 'contact us' on the forum, and 'contact us' on the next screen, one will find Naim's e-mail address and phone numbers.
Rereading my 72 manual informs me socket 4 is the 5-pin connection. Fortunately, little damage is likely to have resulted - I think it's pretty difficult to get the 5-pin cable into the 4-pin socket.
But the manual does seem to say it's socket 2 to the amp, and the diagram you've supplied seems to say socket 3. Puzzling - Admins?
Regards.

Phil,
i was 'informed' that the hi-cap socket nearest to the preamp connection was always the best one to use. So, to the left of socket 4 is socket 3!

Not if you're using a power amp with a built in pre-amp power suply. Older Hicaps have 24v on socket 3.

On the diagram supplied by Geoff the annotation is "4 pin DIN to Cannon to nap 135 power amplifiers" what's "Cannon" then?
I quite liked "the Sundance Kid" gag and after all it's the best movie ever made isn't it?
Cheers

Looks a bit like a fat din connector. Is used on audio equipment and is capable of carrying higher current than a din connctor. Usually used in 3 or 5 pin configurations. Naim power amps that do not supply power to pre amps use the three pin version as a signal input socket. Usually has a clip-in mechanism rather then a locking ring.

I have 135's and the connection I have is din to XLR, is Cannon more or less recent than this? Surely to carry higher current the connector would have to be used at both ends. Anyhow why would the current be higher than normal pre amplification?
