Hum on front channels only

Posted by: Dungassin on 17 August 2010

Well, I'm finally biting the bullet. For the last 3 weeks I've had a noticeable hum on the front channels only. Doesn't change with the volume level setting and is completely separate from the hum/buzz I occasionally get from the power amps.

System to sort out :

Naim AV2, NAC282, HiCap, NAP 250.2, 200, 145, DVD5 (used as CD transport only), nDAC, HiLine, Oppo 83SE, Sony 710 and 860 DVD recorders, XBox, PS2, Wii, XBox 360, Sony 40" LCD TV, Amplified aerial distribution box, nSystem

Mostly connected as you would expect, using coaxial digital cables for 860 and Oppo, Toslink for XBox360. The XBox 360is connected to TV by component (predates the HDMI models), Oppo and 860 to TV by HDMI, 710 via SCART, other games machines SCART via a (non-powered) SCART switching box.

710 sound to 282 via phono/DIN cable (optical socket on 710 broken). PS2, Wii and XBox sound to 282 via phono output on SCART switch box into DIN input on 282.

I think I've described all the connections!

I'm going to dismantle the whole thing, re-lay the cables, and then put one thing back at a time, starting with the 250.2 to the front speaker cables, and seeing when (hopefully never) the hum reappears. I've got to connect the new Stax Headphones in as well. Bloody annoying, but I think I have to do it. Would have done it earlier, but I've been waiting for SWMBO to leave me alone long enough to do it (she had knee replacement nearly 3 weeks ago)

Wish me luck!

Once you have the 250 in place try the connections that are likely to have an earth path thru' to the aerial box via the TV. This often sets up a ground loop.

If you have a subwoofer, I'd start there.
Then remove all the connections to the preamps except the toslink.

By the way, is the Naim system on the same outlet as the rest?

Well, I proceeded as planned. Much bad language from me, I'm afraid. The whole system is in bits, and I've taken the opportunity to label the leads properly.

I think I've tracked down the problem, although it's early days yet.a

1. I can cure most of the hum by substituting a spare NACA5 cable on the right front channel. So I have undone all my careful cable laying of the front channel speaker cables and the original one now has the same hum level as the spare.

2. I got rid of the residual hum by substituting the 200 for the 250.

So, it looks like I have two problems.
1. cable routing
2. possible fault on the 250

Guess who's ringing his dealer in the morning?

I never got as far as reassembling the rest of the system, BTW, so it's possible that's not the end of the story.

The 250 has to go back to Naim.

Legacy of the system reassembly is no sound on right channel from Sony 710 DVD recorder. Nothing wrong with the lead - I checked it on something else to check (having to use analogue connection as optical out on 710 is broken). Bummer. I'll have to see if I can set the 710's output to mono on the analogue out.

Been sorting out my new Stax 2050 earphone set.

Plugged the 2m Chord Crimson DIN to Phono lead into the Tape socket on the 282 and the Earphone box. No sound. Tried a tape lead (Chord Co, pinched it off my NakCR7), works fine (using the red and black phono lead, i.e. record out). So, looks as if the wrong pins are connected in the DIN plug. Could be my fault, but I'm sure I specified what it was for. So, that'll need fixing.

I was hoping to just plug phono leads into the tape out sockets on the AV2 to use the Stax's with that as well. Didn't work, so I assume the digital inputs don't convert and output via the analogue tape out (must check the manual). So I suppose I'll have to do the following :

Use digital out on the AV2 into the nDAC, and use the Tape socket on the 282. I suppose I'll have to set the output of the AV2 or the source to 2 channel PCM.

Why can't life ever be simple?
