female j*** vocalists...

Posted by: ken c on 01 February 2002

i have just been listening to nina simone's "blue for you" -- fabulous album!!! listened to "suzanne" a few times.

at the risk of increasing my now frighteningly long "to buy" list, what other female jazz singers make you feel "gone"...??

i know there are going to be a few very obvious ones in the suggestions, but hey, what does that matter!!?

enjoy

Well folks I would have to rank Betty Carter right up there as an entrancing vocalist with fantastic range and diversity of delivery. Don't think she's been mentioned yet.

I would recommend:

Betty Carter - Look What I got !
Betty Carter - I'm Yours, You're Mine.

Apart from Betty I would rate very highly the following:

Jane Monheit - Never Never Land
Jane Monheit - Come Dream With Me (slightly lower rating than Never Never Land)

Cassandra Wilson - Travelling Miles

Sarah Vaughan - Sarah Vaughan (on Verve - catalogue number 314 543 305-2 - I add this as I believe there may be numerous Sarah Vaughan albums called just Sarah Vaughan).

Hope thatpushes a few buttons for you.

Cheers

Keiko Li(no idea if that's how it's spelt.) Heard a track on Humph Lyttletons's show on Radio 2 - superb, idiosyncratic voice.

cheers

Nigel

edit: It is Keiko Lee. I have just ordered the CD New York State of Mind from 101cd.com

I am a huge fan of Julie London (Cry Me A River fame) - I have yet to hear any other female vocalist sound as good as she (on some 45 year old vinyl). Julie defined the role of torch singer with her smokey breathless voice and amazingly curvy body.

A genuine tragedy when she died a year ago.

BTW - She was first married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame (Sgt. Joe Friday).

Try Dee Dee Bridgewater - Keeping Tradition. Covers of standards with a wonderful voice. Not Ms Simone, but then who could be?

Time for me to go and find some of the above cd's and rediscover female jazz! Thanks for bringing the subject up Ken.

Cheers

COMPANION...SHE OPENS WITH A DYNOMITE COVER OF SONNY BONOS' "THE BEAT GOES ON" (don't laugh, it'll blow you away} DOES SOME ORIGINALS AND FINISHES WITH A VERSION OF PETER GREENS' "BLACK MAGIC WOMEN"(all live of course) THAT WILL MAKE THE HAIRS ON THE BACK OF YOUR NECK STAND UP.
IF YOU LIKE THAT YOU CAN JUMP INTO "NIGHTCLUB". IT ALSO HAS A FEW OLD STANDARDS.
