I need a football team

Posted by: Scott Ryan on 06 October 2006

As someone with growing interest in soccer but living in USAmerica, I know virtually nothing about English teams - except for the most well-known team names, of course.

I want a team to begin to follow and to cheer for, so who should I consider? As a Naim loyalist, is there a team worth selecting whose home is near Salisbury?

This must be one of the strangest requests I seen for a while. As one who endures a world of pain because of the trials and tribulations of my home team, I wonder why anyone would feel any allegiance to a randomly picked team on the other side of the pond.

Why not just watch lots of games and see if you find yourself rooting for one team after a while, perhaps because of some presonality or particular players or the way they play, or respect for the manager.

And if not so be it - I don't support any particular Premiership team, but still love to watch 'cos that is where the best football is to be found.

(nervously awaiting Scotland v France today -being a Scotland supporter is a whole other level of torture)

Get in at grassroots level.
Here's the local side.

Seems a simple request Scott. Footie is a bit like hi-fi though allegiances run deep and strong!

Portsmouth web a fansite
Reading web webzine
Southampton web webzine

First two are Premiership, Southampton are not.

If you like Rugby you could also try Bath (web) or Bristol (web) .

But there are those who habitually and naturally call Rugby 'Football'.

It's ALL Football!

Association Football (originally posh nickname 'Soccer')

Rugby Football (also has an originally posh nickname 'Rugger' - this generally refers to Rugby Union (15-a-side) rather than Rugby League (13-a-side).

Regarding teams to support, and if you want to follow on this Forum, I suggest you follow the fortunes of Ipswich Town - not least because there is a semi-continuous series of threads (e.g. the current Jim Magilton's Blue and White Army.

Although in English terms Ipswich is not so close to Salisbury, in American terms they are virtually nextdoor neighbours!

Scott nearest teams to Salisbury are Yeovil Town and Swindon Town, but if you really want to suffer then you should follow the Tractor Boys (see link in James's post). We have developed a habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, but sometimes things just click and we turn in a stunning performance and that's what makes it so worth while.

I'd rather watch Salisbury City than any of the 3 mentioned in the last post!

A simple question with a simple answer.

Support Liverpool. It's nowhere near Salisbury but then Kenny Dalgleish didn't play for Salisbury did he?

And Salisbury haven't won eighteen league titles and five European Cups!

(Waiting for Man Utd fans to ask how many Premiership titles Liverpool have won. Maybe next season!)

Nah, don't support Liverpool or Man U or Chelsea or Arsenal etc; that would make you a glory hunter.

You should support your local team which, seeing as you are in the US, would probably be Plymouth Argyle. They are the closest geographically, I think.

A very fine football club indeed.

So why doesn't Gareth Barry get in the England team - who has he upset? He always looks impressive to me.

By this reckoning then you should be supporting Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle Winker
(remember how the planes fly to America from London)

Or, assuming I have the right Madison, look at a map of Wisconsin until you find a town name which corresonds to a UK team. There must be a Birmingham, Glasgow or Newcastle nearby.
