Now, personally I don't get the joke.
However I don't remember ever reading of thousands of 15th century Christian peasants mobbing over the mother of God being depicted (OK I know I'm stretching this) in a cartoon or otherwise.
So 21st Century or not, don't you just want to argue that maybe folks get a grip..?
