The geeks among us - Naimees' history meme

Posted by: m0omo0 on 15 April 2008

The whole web seems to go mad about this, well, why not... ?

$ uname -a

$ history | awk '{a[$2]++}END{for(i in a){print a[i] " " i}}' | sort -rn | head
18 ls
17 cd
14 exit
6 /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox
4 exec
3 uname
3 su
3 history
2 which
2 touch

It would have been very different 5 years ago, but now it just says that my computer is a Mac and that I do basically nothing on the command-line...

(- So? Did it hurt?

Would you…. Excuse me, would you mind, we’re talking about shirts.
Huh?
About shirts.
Shirts?
Yes, the problem of shirts. The kind of…um, you know, are they necessary? Shirts.
Where it is.
Where it is. Yes, where is shirts?
I don’t know.
You don’t know.

I realize that this entry is not very complicated, or even very obfuscated, but it is what it is: two lines of code that parses two lines of embedded comments in the code to read the Mayan numbers representing the individual ASCII characters that make up the magazine title, rendered in 90-degree rotated ASCII art.

Sounds more like Nietzsche.

Let's have a look at what these two cryptic command tell us if you run them on your Linux/UNIX computer.

1. "uname -a" gives some information on the computer and operating system you're using. The audiophile equivalent to this is the description of the kit we love, and most of us display this information in our profile, BigH and Hhd included. Winker

2. The second chain of command lists the most used commands typed on the command-line of a terminal window. In other words, the software you run from the command-line. The audiophile equivalent could be your most played songs, including artist, medium, number of plays, etc. Lists like this could flourish in the Music Room in a not too distant future with NaimNet music servers, as you can do it already in iTunes.

... or ??????? Perhaps? George

Is the OS on the Naim Music Server Unix then? That would be good, we could all edit out our playlists using vi or emacs. Then presumably I only need type

while 2<1; do play "Basia Bulat"; done

each time I turn the music server on to have a most rewarding day.

That said, like the other contributors to this thread, I don't see how a Bourne Again shell history command tells you what songs you've played in iTunes.

It doesn't. My fault. Too many shortcuts, I guess.

These two commands tell something about how you use your computer. That's it. (Hence, it tells something about you, and that's why it got some buzz on the web.)

I tried to draw a parallel to the audiophile world for those of us who are not geeks. The audiophile equivalent to the geeky "uname -a" command could be the description of our kit. As for the "history" command, the audiophile equivalent could be a list of our most played songs. You can pull this information from iTunes if you use it (25 most played songs, for instance), and I am confident this information will be available for those who use a Naim music server in the future, through the NaimNet user interface. I was not trying to say that NaimNet gears used UNIX or Linux.

So, in an audiophile world, the equivalent to this "history meme" (try to Google these two words) would be the posting of the description of our kit and the list of our most played songs.

As BigH said, WTF. Not many geeks among the Naimees crowd on this forum, or not keen to bleat with the flock. No one hurt.

Just to join in the geekfest - what history outputs is more akin to a list of the most recently played CDs rather than the most played...

Right. But IIRC "awk '{a[$2]++}END{for(i in a){print a[i] " " i}}' | sort -rn" gives you the most used commands.

Smile Perhaps that'll teach me to re-read the whole thread before commenting - but I doubt it!
