NB,

This is really meant to be a pub discussion, nothing serious. It's so hard to be lighthearted on a forum. I was just trying to get a handle on what you liked. I can understand why people like Queen, or Bowie for that matter, it's just not stuff that I liked after I had some lengthy exposure.

Nick: Yes, I guess that Liberace and Freddie did entertain, errr, widely. please enlighten me as to the indentity of 'Smokie', I only know of the bear ?

Queen are one of the greatest bands ever (IMO). For some reason you appear to have omitted this option on your poll. Big Grin

They have undoubtedly produced some landmark singles, but their strength is not limited to this. They have some superb albums and tracks that most casual observers may never have heard.

Undoubtedly their experimentation with multitracking and voices and musical arrangement in the 70's will have put a number of people off, additionally they tended to throw in a few throw away ditties that many find unpalatable.

Their arrangements were always imaginative, with a varied musical style from heavy rock, folk, prog, jazz (almost), pop, electonic etc etc. You might also be suprised by the number of bands that name Queen as key influences, as a reader of the music press and a Queen fan I tend to notice these comments and there are hundreds.

Obviously being a great entertainer (as in fact the whole band were) isn't enough in itself to make you follow the band, but please don't suggest this is not a good thing, and many bands could certainly take a page from this book.

Liberace was brilliant.
Little known fact...he was gay!!

Unbelievable Liberace was gay !!!
Who have guessed?
I'll not even partake in the poll. I'm wating for the ALL music is crap poll. Perhaps I can pick up a 552/500 for £100 when every body has slagged of every group etc and people realise its a complete waste of time listening to anything as it will only reult in deafness if they do.

I've heard some underground (albeit unsupported) rumours that Freddie Mercury may have been similarly inclined. Don't believe it myself.

I'll bet he wouldn't have been half as popular at the end if people had known!

Excellent live. Not so clever in the stuido but a pretty impressive CV nevertheless.

I'm off to look for that seagull thread....

They look old enough to know better. What happened to the original singer?

Smokie originated near where I lived as a youth, and I had a couple of pints with them once. I only recognise the guy on the right. Were the rest of them killed in the bus crash? I accept that:
1. My memory is shot
2. That photo looks like it was taken 20 years or more after I last saw them

Sometimes Nick you take the words right out of my mouth.

Humm, I'm struggleing to find the relevance of this fairly obtuse argument, but must say 'Live Dead' is complete self indulgent twaddle, 10 minutes of feedback for gawd's sake.

PS. I love the Doors, Hate Mariah Carey, Love the Dead's acoustic excurtions (American Beauty, Workingmans Dead).

If Queen were that unpopular could someone please explain their massive record sales and their ability to cram the fans into all their concerts!

Would you say the same about Westlife & Take That? The Quo have some pretty loyal fans too.
Queen are not rubbish, but I can't bear them. Each to his own and all that.

Popularity and Value have no correlation, for example, in no particular order, Margeret Thatcher, André Rieu, Stairway to Heaven, Norah Jones, Diane Krall, Manchester United, Speed Limits, Benny Hill, and so on.

NB, if Queen is one of your favourite bands then I'm not out to rubbish your taste. After all, I like Genesis and Yes, both whom are hardly defensible. I also like Leon Redbone, and nobody gives a shit about that thread.

I know your not Peter. Wink

I realise for everything in life, there are some people that like it and others that dont. I admit that I enjoy listening to their music as I do with other bands like Genesis, pink Floyd, Rush and many others.

Life would be boring if we all agreed, wouldn't it?
