Oasis CD free with Sunday Times

Posted by: Shayman on 21 June 2002

According to a TV advert yesterday The Sunday Times will have a free 6 track Oasis CD with it this week. On the advert is some small print which I think is saying three of the tracks will only play four times.

How does that work then? Will trying to play them more than this damage a CD player? Then again if their last two albums are much to go by four times may be a bit ambitious.

I'm really glad you posted this! My boyfriend thought I was crazy / making it up / minus my glasses when I said I'd seen that on a TV ad last night, but now he reckons:

Every time the cd is played, the laser runs over a designated series
of data,which rewrites the data, e.g. 0101, then 0011, then 0010
etc.counting down 1 every time, until of course,it has played 4
times and refuses to play anymore

Don't understand why you'd do this unless it's un-copyable as well.

This offer will not persuade me to take the Sunday Times or indeed tempt me to buy the cruddy album. I left Oasis behind after their 2nd offering, saved me a few quid!

The fact you would need a pc to play it would seem to suggest you could just copy it anyway?

Did it play on a normal CD player, or just the PC?

Someone must have had a listen by now!!

the 3 tracks that you could only play four times were only playable on a PC.

You could only acces the other 3 tracks from a normal CD player.

Could be bothered to put it into a PC

The CD turned out to be a pretty poor offer in my opinion.

8 tracks were on the CD, 6 audio and 2 video

Of the six audio only 3 can be played on a conventional CD player. Two of the 3 were from previous albums and 1 is from the new which is pretty poor I think.

The remaining 3 audio tracks can only be played on a "PC or Mac connected to the internet" and can only be listened to 4 times. Presumably a combination of the software which plays the tracks and somesort of database on the www together make sure the tracks can't be played more than 4 times.

I really can't see the point of this to be honest. Let's face it the entire album has been fully available for months on the internet to anyone with a ....you guessed it...."PC or Mac connected to the internet" .

I've got to admit I haven't played the internet tracks at all yet. Its the sort of crap no-one ever hangs on to and as a consequence becomes a collectors item in later years. Oasis will without doubt be one of the few collectable 90's mainstream bands in years to come.

Yes its pretty low key defense. The determined could simply get a two ended Mini jack lead, plug it from speaker out to mic in on their sound card and use something like winamp to record the music duh!

Can't see as anyone would bother with this type of drivil on their harddrive though ;-)
