Naimuniti – upnp render
Posted by: #cj on 12 December 2010
I really have admit the usability of the uniti is great. There is one thing, which I don’t like (but just for the reason everything else is running great) … It is “upnp render and the display”. UPNP on the uniti is perfect, but when I use upnplay (android) I don’t like the text on the uniti display.
… why can t I see the track/artist/album of the song I am actually playing? Somebody mentions that is not possible, but on a cold start up and using upnp renderer I can see the first track as expected … an alternative could be just to display “upnp-render” when it is in render mode (it is a little bit strange always to see the last upnp-uniti-track on the display) … ok maybe this has changed with the new firmware (3.0) …
… iRadio and upnp render, I would prefer to use upnp-renderer only when I am in the upnp mode … now when I am in iRadio mode and I start the control (upnplay, android) the uniti starts to play as well (but maybe other ones like this behavior)
… or, do I miss something?

Though this may not be what you'd like to hear, the n-Stream app running on an iPod touch is much more elegant, relatively inexpensive, and will provide seamless control of the unit.
If, on the other hand, you are using your Android-based control point to select Internet Radio stations, there is NO need to switch to the iRadio input–simply keep it on UPnP at the top of the tree (UPnP Servers).

Dear David,
thanks for your answer. And you are right I am not happy about it. I ve seen n-stream last week and I also think it’s a well done app.
For me upnp on the uniti is 99% perfect and I am always a little bit sad that it is not 100%. Using upnp and not seeing the actual playing track on the uniti display is just not perfect (after seeing it sometimes working, when/why? I don’t know).
> just the question is this fixed with 3.0?
> or depends the problem with ID3 tags versions?
> or depends the problem with upnp servers? (I am using mediatomb on my server?
A fix in 3.0 would be a reason for me for an update (I ve to bring it some km to the next naim dealer, so I am in a waiting position). I know the n-Stream app and it looks fantastic, but for me no reason to switch iOS. I also don’t think that naim is a company which prevents some features just sell their app …
maybe you/somebody could tell me the upnp - display - experience with 3.0
thanks ...

For me the Uniti displays Artist, Track and sampling rate (which I added from the menu system) Using Eyeconnect as a UPnP Server I sometimes get repeated entries but using miniDLNA under Vortexbox the display is fine.
I think the UPnP server is the crucial element.
My Uniti is running V3 of the firmware.

Hi #cj,
you won't be able to get the screen synchronized with your control point app, because this is done in a proprietary way through the Naim's own API. So, in general n-stream uses this API to control the unit and "understands" UPnP from your server, but that's all. At the beginning I was fooled too, but after that Steve from R&D cleared this. It is the same with the volume control / mute functionality - currently this is not exposed through UPnP way for the reasons of achieving better SQ, thus you won't be able to increase or decrease the volume with 3rd party control point software. So, the only options you currently have for full control of the unit are either the provided remote control or n-stream on i-device - "Sad but true"

... ok, i try to understand ... but i ve seen it in real: uniti-screen AND mobile-screen, a feature bug? ... vor dem gang zum glühweinstandl, schwöre!
Could someone test:
... input iRadio ... running a station ... start plugplayer/upnplay and use naimuniti as renderer and upnplay as contolpoint ... start/play a song ... what happens, what could you see on the screen? firmware 2.0/3.0
... ok is n-stream (partly) also working with firmware 2.0?
... about miniDLNA, in the next days i want to test miniDLNA on my openwrt/backfire, where i have ushare running for month (but sadly without covers) ... but, thanks for the advice.
... thanks ...

I am certainly able to get n- stream to show covers via miniDLNA on Vortexbox - this is a huge improvement on Ushare.
I Believe that only firmware v3 will work with n-stream.
