Music at Chez Lontano

Posted by: BigH47 on 30 November 2008

Well it looks like every one is tongue tied today. A very good time was had by all.My memory is not up to remembering all the various tracks we heard. What I can say is that my views on jazz have changed but very very little, there was some Genesis, Marillion, EST,ECM label,Steve Wilson, and loads more.
Great food , good company and great sounds what else is there?
Thanks to Jane and Adrian.

How so ? Elaborate if you might. Thanks.

RE jazz I now know I dislike it a lot instead of a hell of a lot. Smile I have revsted EST and found it OK much of the other jazz played yesterday was just a "noise" to me. We had disagreements on John Mayer too, some didn't like Genesis (ROTF was not there) etc.

RE snake oil the BC did seem to make a difference but was too short a dem to evaluate, but definitely something in it.

it would have it improve it a lot for me. Winker

Thanks for the additional info - I am always fascinated by the convergence and divergence between any given two people on music - ie like/like on Porcupine Tree then like/dislike on Mayer or jazz or whatever.

I guess when you find someone you share a passion with, you tend to make more allowances for trying other things they like. Sometimes it is another shared passion, sometimes it is noise.

I like Genesis's best album: Trespass.

I do sympathise with your views on jazz, whilst there are some jazz albums I like it is a very acquired taste - Barbara Thompson and Soft Machine are my favourite artists that would be classified as jazz (I think).

Oliver do you use Skype on your PC?

I do, but might have to reinstall it - my camera is not working any more. Confused

Just found the thread - must be getting old!

A great day, thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I can only echo what has already been said, good food great company and of course not forgetting the music - 'Firth of Fifth' was truly awesome!

Many thanks - well done Adrian!

Adrian

Thank you to both you and Jane for Saturday evening; the music, company and the lovely meal. It really was a great occasion and good to see Howard, Mrs BigH and Denis again.

Much of the evening was with unknown (to me) music but these….

were my particular favourites. (I think the Steve Hackett album was correct, perhaps someone else can confirm)

I’m looking forward to next time when we can do it all again!

Best wishes, Julian

Sounds like a good night was had by all.

Anyone have a raging hangover?

Mind you isn't it Keith Jarrett so Adrian will be at that lucky devil.

Mike

Thanks for the correction.

Ewemon

Nope, all driving except for the hosts and Munch, so limited (but very nice) alcohol was consumed!

Adrian & Jane,

Thank you for hosting an excellent evening of music, food, music & food again (treacle tart & custard Smile).

The CD's you heard of mine were:-

Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo
1: Speeding Motorcycle: with phoned-in vocals by its author, Daniel Johnston
2: Barnaby Hardly Working

Sunhouse - Crazy On The Weekend
1: Swing Low
2: Animal

Steven Wilson - Cover Version 4
The Guitar Lesson (orig by Momus). This was spun in the Bedini machine.

Dear Adrian,

HHMMMM so you have not invited the Antipodean group.

Mind you a day return to Sussex is not really feasible.

So it seems i missed an entertaining few hours of excellent music. DAMN BLAST AND DAMN again.

Still i hope to reinvite Oliver to my humble abode for another listen soon. I anticipate he will bring some excellent music.

Please send me an invite next time as i would appreciate the opportunity to decline. That way i won't feel left out.

regards David

If this scared you, just ask Adrian about all my Chinese test tracks. Big Grin Winker

Did you lot manage to get a taste of some Whisky and Liqueur cakes in tins sent down to Adrian or did he "forget" Smile to let you taste them.

All,

Thanks for all the nice replies. We enjoyed having everyone over. For those here, my boys did not get to sleep until midnight as the friend who was here stayed over and that was too exciting for them. Then we had a long and tiring day out Sunday with the kids (being a pain in the arse), Monday late home after Keith Jarrett and long night at work last night so this is my first chance to reply.

Some replies....

Howard, keep persevering with the jazz, you'll get there eventually. EST is a good place to start.

Munch - speakers have been left where they were and the system has not been played since Saturday. Will reposition them at the weekend.

Jeff A - apart from Porcupine Tree, there was no music that pleased everyone (except for me). I was surprised how difficult it was to find something that would. Philip Glass came closest.

Julian - yes it was Voyage of the Acolyte. Great album.

Ewen - two bottle of fine Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon were consumed and some Peroni Beers

Denis - did you get lost on the way back as well? Satnav for Christmas? Hope you liked the Marillion CD's.

David/MilesSmiles - you are always welcome. Always enjoyed our listening sessions in Sydney exploring new sounds. Hope you get your visa David. Just got home from London. Bad enough to have to defrost the car in the morning but to have to do it in the evening after the train is just not playing ball. I did not see frost once in 4 years down under. I will send you an invite. And Oliver you can keep that Chinese CD to yourself.

Ewen - I showed everyone the cakes but we never quite got round to eating them. We will save them for Christmas.

Cheers

Munch,

It that's the Steve Hackett record I think it is, the one with some gig pics on the inner sleeve, I can be spotted in the audience in one of them.
